Terms
The terms we trade on.
Short, in plain words, and worth two minutes before you load the ute. The part about proving the metal is yours to sell is the one people ask about most.
Who we are
Metal Plus is a trading name of Melt Metals Pty Ltd (ABN 11 646 984 572), at 159 Ashley St, Braybrook VIC 3019. In these terms, "we" and "us" mean that business, and "you" means the person selling metal to us or using this website.
Quotes and prices
The prices on this website are a guide, not an offer. They are what we pay per kilogram (per tonne for steel) for clean, sorted metal of each grade, as at the date shown with them. Where your metal falls within a range depends on its grade, how clean it is and how much there is.
A price we give you over the phone, by email or on the quote form is an estimate based on what you have described. It is not binding, for a straightforward reason: we have not seen the metal. The firm price is the one we give you once the load is in front of us, graded and weighed.
What changes an estimate in practice is grade, contamination and how mixed the load is. Copper with the insulation still on it is not bare bright copper, and a bin with timber and plasterboard through it is worth less than a bin without. We will tell you what came out of your load and what it graded as.
An estimate is good for the day it is given. If you are quoted on Monday and arrive a fortnight later, expect the number to have moved.
The price-beat guarantee
Got a price from another Melbourne yard? Bring it in writing and we will better it by ten cents per kilogram. Not a vague promise to match, a set figure we put our name to.
Selling metal to us
When you sell us metal, you are telling us three things, and you need all three to be true:
- The metal is yours to sell. You own it, or you have the owner's authority to sell it.
- It is not stolen, and it did not come from anywhere you were not entitled to take it from.
- You have told us what is in it. Anything hazardous, sealed, pressurised or oil-filled, and anything that is not what it looks like.
We are required by Victorian law to record identification from every seller and to keep a record of every transaction.
Bring photo identification. We cannot buy from you without it, and that is not a policy we are able to make an exception to. Police may inspect those records.
If we have reasonable grounds to think metal is not yours to sell, we will decline the load. We would rather turn away a job than handle stolen metal, and if you are legitimate you will have no trouble with any of this.
Payment
You are paid on the spot, once the load has been weighed and you have agreed the weight. Not on terms, not on an invoice, and before you leave the yard.
What we accept
The what we buy page lists the material we take. If what you have is not on it, ring and ask, because the list covers the common cases rather than every case.
There are things we will not take, and it is better to know before you load them:
- We do not take household appliances: washing machines, fridges, dryers or dishwashers.
- Gas bottles, fire extinguishers, and anything else sealed or under pressure.
- Anything containing or contaminated with asbestos.
- Sealed drums and containers, unless they are empty, open and clean.
- General rubbish, timber, plasterboard and soil mixed through a load.
We can refuse any load. If material turns up that we cannot take, it goes back with you.
Pickups and bins
We collect scrap metal from factories and industrial sites only, and whether a particular load is collected is our decision when you contact us. See the pickup page. Everyone else is welcome at the yard Monday to Saturday, with any amount. Scrap cars are collected separately, as set out on the car bodies page.
A collection time is a window rather than an appointment. Traffic, weather and the load in front of yours all move it, and we will tell you if it has.
For a pickup or a bin to go ahead, we need safe and legal access for a truck. That means somewhere to park it, room to work, and the material reachable. If a driver arrives and cannot get to the metal safely, the job does not happen that day.
While a bin is on your site it is your responsibility. Do not overload it above the rim, do not move it, and keep out of it anything from the list above. If a bin comes back contaminated, we may charge for disposal.
Liability
Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law, and nothing here is intended to. Those rights cannot be excluded and we are not trying to exclude them.
Beyond that, we are not liable for loss that is not a reasonably foreseeable result of something we did, and we are not liable for damage caused by information you gave us being wrong, for material you left in a load that should not have been in it, or for a delay caused by something outside our control.
Metal you leave with us is sold to us at that point. Once a load is weighed, settled and paid, it has changed hands.
Using this website
The content here is ours, or used with permission, and it is here for you to read and use in deciding whether to deal with us. Do not copy it wholesale onto another site.
We keep this site accurate and current, but we do not guarantee it is complete or free of errors, and we do not guarantee it is always available. Information here is general. It is not advice about your specific load, and the way to get that is to ring us.
Where we link to another site, we do not control it and we are not responsible for what is on it.
The reviews shown on this site are real reviews left on our Google Business Profile, quoted as they were written and linked back to the profile so you can read them at the source. We do not edit them.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of Victoria, Australia, and the courts of Victoria have jurisdiction.
If we change these terms, the date at the top is the date we last did. The terms that apply to a transaction are the ones published when it happened.
