Scrap stainless steel · per kg

$0.40 to $2.80/kg

As at

Scrap stainless steel prices per kg in Melbourne, as at 29 October 2026
Grade Price per kg
316 stainless Top rate Marine and chemical grade. Non-magnetic. $1.80 to $2.80/kg
304 stainless Sinks, benches, tanks and most kitchen stainless. Non-magnetic. $1.20 to $2.20/kg
Stainless turnings and swarf Clean, dry turnings, kept apart from mild steel swarf. $0.80 to $1.50/kg
400 series stainless Magnetic stainless: exhausts, trims and cutlery. $0.40 to $0.90/kg

Grade is the big one. 316, with more nickel in it, is worth more than 304, and the magnetic 400 series is worth less than both. Turnings are weighed apart from solid stainless. And stainless thrown into a steel bin is paid as steel, which is the most expensive mistake there is with it.

Not sure which grade yours is? Ring, or send a photo, and we will tell you what to expect before you load the trailer.

Why people use this yard

Weighed in front of you

You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.

Paid on the spot

Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.

Open till 6:30pm weekdays

Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.

No minimum at the yard

A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.

What we buy

The stainless steel grades we buy.

Stainless is the metal people most often get short-changed on, because the grades look identical and the difference between them is real. We check rather than assume.

You do not need to know the grade: we grade it in front of you and show you what came out of the load.

  • A stainless steel kitchen sink and drainer in a scrap bin

    304 stainless

The common one. Commercial kitchens, benches, sinks, splashbacks, balustrades.

  • Stainless steel tube, bends and flanges in a scrap bin

    316 stainless

Marine and food grade, with more nickel in it. Worth more than 304 and worth identifying.

  • Tangled thin stainless steel strip offcuts

    400 series stainless

Magnetic, lower nickel, worth less. Often kitchen equipment, trims and some exhaust work.

  • A heap of silver stainless steel turnings and swarf

    Stainless turnings and swarf

From machining. Kept out of the solid grades and weighed on its own.

Not on the list, or not sure what you have got?

These are the common ones, not everything we take. Not sure it is stainless? Try a fridge magnet: 304 and 316 usually will not hold one, the 400 series usually will, and mild steel always does. Send a photo and we will tell you what to expect.

Dawood is one of the nicest lads you’ll meet. Clearly communicated on the phone and was a pleasure to deal with. Had to get rid of these wheels asap and he took care of me with a fair payment.

Would highly recommend his service, easy and straightforward.

I recently had an old accident-damaged car that I needed to get rid of while I was in Bendigo. After searching on Google, I found MetalPlus in Melbourne, and I’m really glad I chose them.

The whole process was smooth and hassle-free. They were professional, easy to deal with, and offered me a fair price for my car. When I dropped the car off, everything was handled quickly, and I received my payment without any issues.

I’m very happy with the service I received and would definitely recommend MetalPlus to anyone looking to sell a scrap or unwanted car. Great experience overall!

Where to sell it

Where to sell scrap stainless steel in Melbourne.

Drop it off at our yard, 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, with any amount, from a single sink to a ute load of benching, with no appointment and no minimum at the gate. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday, and outside those hours by arrangement.

Stainless turns up most from cafe and restaurant refits in the inner suburbs and food processing plant in the north. From a factory or an industrial site, we collect, weighed on site and paid on collection. For a plant clear-out, we will tell you whether a pickup or a bin suits the job.

Bring photo ID, which Victorian law requires for every scrap metal sale. And keep the stainless away from mild steel from the start of the job, because that is the mix that costs you.

Questions

Questions about scrap stainless steel.

If yours is not here, ring and ask. It costs nothing and it saves a trip.

How do you tell 304 from 316?

Not by eye, because nobody can. It gets checked properly rather than guessed, and you see what your load was graded as before anything is settled.

My stainless sticks to a magnet. Is it still worth anything?

Yes, it is most likely 400 series. It is worth less than 304 or 316 but it is still stainless and still well above mild steel.

Do you take stainless kitchen benches?

Yes, and they are common. Worth more with the frame and underlay removed, though bring them either way.

What if my load is a mix of grades?

We sort it here. Bring it as it is if separating is not practical, but keep it away from mild steel, because that is the mix that genuinely costs you.

How much is scrap stainless steel worth per kg?

We pay $0.40 to $2.80 per kg for scrap stainless steel at our Braybrook yard in Melbourne, depending on the grade. By grade, per kg: 316 $1.80 to $2.80, 304 $1.20 to $2.20, stainless turnings $0.80 to $1.50 and 400 series $0.40 to $0.90. What your load comes to is confirmed on the scales in front of you, by grade and weight.

Do you pick up scrap stainless steel?

From factories and industrial sites, yes, anywhere in Greater Melbourne, weighed on site and paid on collection. We do not collect from houses: bring it to the yard instead, where there is no minimum at the gate.

Pickup for factories and industrial sites

Is stainless worth more than ordinary steel?

Yes, by a long way, which is why it should never go in the steel bin. Even the magnetic 400 series is worth well above mild steel.

Worth knowing

How to get more for your scrap stainless steel.

Including the times when the honest answer is that it is not worth your trouble.

  1. 01

A magnet is a rough guide, not an answer

304 and 316 are usually not magnetic and the 400 series usually is, so a fridge magnet will separate the cheap stuff from the good stuff most of the time. It will not tell 304 from 316, and work-hardened 304 can pick up some magnetism, so treat it as a sort, not a grade.

  2. 02

Keep it well away from mild steel

This is the expensive mistake. Stainless mixed into a heavy steel bin gets paid as heavy steel, which is a fraction of what it was worth. Keep it in its own pile from the start of the job.

  3. 03

Take the brackets and timber off benches

Commercial benches usually sit on a steel frame with a timber or particleboard underlay. The stainless top on its own is worth a great deal more per kilo than the assembly.

However you bring it, it is weighed in front of you.

You watch the load go on the scales, you read the figure yourself, and you get it on a docket before money is discussed.

How we weigh and pay

Recognise yours?

Where scrap stainless steel usually comes from.

The jobs that most often produce scrap stainless steel. If yours is not here it does not mean we will not take it.

  • Commercial kitchen fit-outs and strip-outs
  • Food and beverage processing plant
  • Tanks, vats and brewery equipment
  • Balustrades, handrails and architectural work
  • Dairy and winery pipework
  • Marine fittings and boat hardware

How it works

Four steps, and you are paid before you leave.

  1. 01

Ring us or send a photo

Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.

  2. 02

    Bring it to the yard

Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.

  3. 03

    Weighed in front of you

Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.

  4. 04

    Paid on the spot

Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.

Weighing and payment

You watch the scales. That is the whole policy.

The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

  • Your load is weighed where you can see it. Nothing goes out the back and comes back with a number on it.
  • You get a docket with the weight on it. Written down, in your hand, before anything is settled.
  • Grades are shown to you, not just quoted. If your copper is two different grades we will separate it in front of you and explain why.
  • Payment is settled on the spot. Once the weight is agreed, that is it. No invoice, no waiting.
