Scrap metal recycling, Flemington
Metal Plus buys scrap metal from the people renovating Flemington and Kensington’s old cottages and terraces, from the plumbers, electricians and builders working on them, and from the strip-outs and refits in the flats and commercial buildings around Racecourse Road and Macaulay Road. Most of it is scrap copper: old pipe, cable and wiring, with brass tapware, lead flashing and aluminium windows beside it.
Our yard at 159 Ashley St, Braybrook is a straight run out west, so a ute or car boot of copper is quickest dropped off at the yard: no appointment and no minimum. A strip-out with more than a tonne of metal can have a bin on site, and the industrial sites left along the river and the railway can have it collected. Graded in front of you, paid on the spot.
Where the yard is
Smithfield Road runs out of Flemington past the racecourse, crosses the Maribyrnong at Lynchs Bridge and becomes Ballarat Road, which runs through Braybrook. That makes the yard a short, simple run for a ute or a car boot of copper, with no appointment and no minimum at the gate. You are weighed and paid while you wait.
What we see from here
This is what turns up from Flemington, and roughly who it comes from.
Old copper pipe, cable and wiring out of the cottages and terraces of Flemington and Kensington. Small by weight and high by value, and worth a trip however little there is.
What scrap copper is worthBrass tapware and fittings, stainless sinks, and lead flashing off old roofs. Each is graded on its own, so bring them in separate buckets rather than mixed.
Scrap brass taps and fittingsCable, cable tray, ducting, roller doors and aluminium shopfronts from refits of flats, shops and offices along Racecourse Road and Macaulay Road. A big strip-out can have a bin.
Scrap cable and wireHow it works
Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.
Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.
Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.
Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.
Three ways to sell
Pull in, get weighed, get paid. No appointment and no minimum. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement.
For factories and industrial sites across Greater Melbourne. Tell us what the site produces and roughly how much, and we will bring the right truck.
Scrap bins dropped on site for jobs over a tonne. Factories, demolition, construction and site clearance. We swap them out as they fill.
Weighing and payment
The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

Where we go
Flemington is most likely named after James Watson, a pastoral agent who bought land here in 1839; another story credits Robert Fleming, a butcher on the ground the racecourse later took. Horses were racing on the river flats by March 1840, and the Port Phillip Racing Club leased the site in 1848.
The rest of the river flats went to work. The Newmarket stockyards opened in 1859 and abattoirs beside them in 1861, and along the Maribyrnong came a bone mill, soap and candle works, fellmongers and Debney’s tannery, opened in 1876. Flemington and Kensington became a borough of their own in 1882 and joined the City of Melbourne in 1905. The last muster at the stockyards was held in 1985, and the ground went to housing.
Today both suburbs are residential, from the high-rise flats built at Debneys Park from 1957 to streets of old cottages that are steadily being renovated. That is where the metal comes from now: copper pipe and wiring that has been in the walls for decades, brass taps and roof lead, and the strip-outs of flats and shops.

Questions
The ones we get asked most from Flemington. Anything else, ring and ask.
Call 0452 220 422From a factory or an industrial site, yes. From a house or a flat, no: we do not collect from homes. Scrap copper is easy to bring in, though. A car boot holds a good amount, it is a straight run out along Ballarat Road, and there is no minimum at the gate.
At our yard in Braybrook, out along Ballarat Road. Copper pipe, cable, wire and copper with brass fittings still on are all bought, graded in front of you and paid on the spot. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday.
The copper pipe and old wiring first, because that is where most of the money is. Then brass taps and fittings, any lead flashing off the roof, aluminium window frames with the glass out, and the gutters and roofing iron. Keep it out of the skip and in separate piles, and it is paid at its own grades.
Yes, where there is more than a tonne of metal and somewhere for the bin to sit. If it has to go on the street rather than on the property, the council usually needs a permit. Ring with the building, the metal and where a bin could go, and we will tell you what suits.
You are paid on the spot as soon as the weight is agreed, and from Flemington that is usually at our gate in Braybrook. That is what most people searching for cash for scrap are after. How a scrap metal dealer in Victoria may pay is set by state law, the same at every yard, and our page on the law explains it.
The same as from anywhere: it depends on the grade, how clean it is and the weight, at the copper prices per kg we publish. Bright stripped wire and clean pipe pay the most; copper with fittings, solder or insulation on it pays less. Ring or send a photo and we will tell you what to expect before you load the car.
Ring us and we will tell you what it is worth and whether it is worth bringing in. Takes two minutes and it costs you nothing to ask.
