Why people use this yard

Weighed in front of you

You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.

Paid on the spot

Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.

Open till 6:30pm weekdays

Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.

No minimum at the yard

A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.

Demolition and site clearance

Scrap metal recycling for demolition and construction sites.

Metal Plus buys the metal that comes off Melbourne’s demolition, strip-out and construction sites: structural steel and roofing from the knock-down, copper pipe and cable from the strip-out, and reo, framing and conduit offcuts from the build. Demolition contractors, builders, strip-out crews and site managers use us so the metal leaves the site as money rather than as skip weight.

On a demolition site the usual arrangement is a scrap metal bin on the ground, free for jobs over a tonne and swapped as it fills. Plant and machinery coming out of an industrial site can be dismantled and collected. A ute load from a small job is quickest dropped at the yard in Braybrook. Every load is weighed and graded, and you are paid on the spot.

What we buy

The metal that comes off a demolition site.

Every one of these is paid for, and most of them at their own grade, so keeping them apart on site is where the money is.

01

Structural steel

Beams, columns, RHS, purlins and plate from the frame of the building. Heavy, usually bin work, and paid by weight at steel rates.

02

Roofing and cladding

Corrugated iron, Colorbond, gutters, downpipes and flashings. Light gauge, but it adds up across a roof. Lead flashing goes in its own pile.

03

Copper pipe and cable

The plumbing and the wiring, pulled before the excavator reaches them. The best-paying metal on most sites, and the first thing lost in a skip.

What scrap copper is worth
04

Aluminium windows and frames

Window and door frames, shopfronts and cladding. Worth more with the glass out and kept apart from the steel.

Scrap aluminium, by grade
05

Reo, mesh and framing

Reinforcing bar and mesh from slabs and footings, light steel framing and conduit from the build. Worth more with the concrete knocked off.

06

Plant and services

Switchboards, motors, pumps, ducting, cable tray and machinery out of commercial and industrial buildings. Motors and cable are graded apart from the steel.

How it works

How a demolition job works with us.

  1. 01

    Tell us the job

What the metal is, roughly how much, how long you need the bin, and where it has to sit. Access matters more than people expect, so mention anything tight.

  2. 02

    We drop the bin

Placed where you want it, as close to the work as access allows.

  3. 03

You fill it, we swap it

On a long job we swap a full bin for an empty one so the work never stops. On a one-off we collect it when you say it is ready.

  4. 04

Weighed and paid on the metal

The bin is weighed and you are paid for what was in it. This is scrap metal collection, not a waste service: the metal is paid for, not charged to take away.

Worth knowing

How to get more for demolition scrap metal.

  1. 01

    Strip the copper first

Pull the pipe and the cable before demolition starts. Once the building is down they are mixed into the rubble, and most of their value goes with them.

  2. 02

Keep the metal out of the general skip

Metal in the general skip is money paid to throw away, and timber, plaster and concrete in with the metal drag down its grade. A separate metal bin keeps both clean.

  3. 03

    Keep the grades apart

Copper, brass, aluminium and stainless each go at their own grade. A drum or a corner of the bin for each is all it takes, and it is the difference between being paid for copper and being paid for steel.

  4. 04

    Knock the concrete off

Reo and mesh with the concrete knocked off go at a better grade than the same steel caked in it, because somebody has to clean it either way.

Weighing and payment

You watch the scales. That is the whole policy.

The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

  • Your load is weighed where you can see it. Nothing goes out the back and comes back with a number on it.
  • You get a docket with the weight on it. Written down, in your hand, before anything is settled.
  • Grades are shown to you, not just quoted. If your copper is two different grades we will separate it in front of you and explain why.
  • Payment is settled on the spot. Once the weight is agreed, that is it. No invoice, no waiting.

I recently had an old accident-damaged car that I needed to get rid of while I was in Bendigo. After searching on Google, I found MetalPlus in Melbourne, and I’m really glad I chose them.

The whole process was smooth and hassle-free. They were professional, easy to deal with, and offered me a fair price for my car. When I dropped the car off, everything was handled quickly, and I received my payment without any issues.

I’m very happy with the service I received and would definitely recommend MetalPlus to anyone looking to sell a scrap or unwanted car. Great experience overall!

Book a bin

Tell us about the job.

We come back to you with what suits it: a bin, a collection for plant, or the yard for a small load. If you would rather ask first, ring.

The quickest way for us to get back to you.

So we know where you are.

So we know whose site it is when we ring back.

How would you like to do it?

We only collect from factories and industrial sites. From a house, bring it to the yard: any amount, no appointment.

Rough is fine. "Steel offcuts and swarf from the fab shop, a couple of tonnes a month" tells us plenty. Say whether it is one job or ongoing, and mention anything tight about access.

Up to four. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is worth, and it saves a trip if it turns out not to be.

In a hurry? Ring 0452 220 422. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday.

Questions

Questions about demolition scrap.

Anything not here, ring and ask before the job starts. It costs nothing, and it can save a day.

Call 0452 220 422
Is the bin free on a demolition site?

Yes, for demolition jobs over a tonne: the bin costs nothing, and you are paid for the metal that goes in it. It is swapped as it fills, so the job does not wait on us.

What do you take off a demolition site?

Any metal: structural steel, roofing and cladding, copper pipe and cable, aluminium windows, reo and mesh, ducting, switchboards, motors and plant. Keep timber, plaster, concrete and general waste out of the metal bin, because metal with rubbish through it is graded lower.

Should we strip the copper and cable before demolition?

Yes, if you can. They are the best-paying metals on most sites, and once a building is down they end up in the rubble. Pull them first, keep them in their own drum or bag, and they are paid at their own grade.

Scrap cable and wire

Can you dismantle plant and machinery on site?

Yes. Machinery dismantling is part of what we do on industrial sites. Ring with what it is, where it is and how a truck gets to it, and we will tell you how we would take it out.

Machinery dismantling

We are a builder, not a demolition contractor. Does this suit us?

Yes. A construction site throws off reo, mesh, framing, conduit and cable every week, and a bin on site, swapped as it fills, keeps it out of the general skip. On a small job, a ute load is quickest at the yard, where there is no minimum.

Dropping off at the Braybrook yard

How quickly can you swap a bin?

It depends on where the site is and what the trucks are doing that day. Ring and we will tell you what we can do rather than promise a window we cannot hold. On a long job, a standing swap means you rarely need to ring at all.

Can we get cash for demolition scrap metal?

You are paid on the spot for every bin and every load, once the weight is agreed. That is what most people searching for cash for scrap want to know. How a scrap metal dealer in Victoria may pay is set by state law, the same for every yard, and our page on the law explains it.

What the law says

What is demolition scrap metal worth?

It depends on the mix. Structural steel and roofing are paid by weight at steel rates, so the volume is what makes them worth it; copper, brass, aluminium and cable each pay far more per kilo, which is why keeping them apart matters most. Ring or send a photo and we will tell you what to expect.

Scrap metal prices per kg

Got metal sitting there doing nothing?

Ring us and we will tell you what it is worth and whether it is worth bringing in. Takes two minutes and it costs you nothing to ask.
