Why people use this yard

Weighed in front of you

You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.

Paid on the spot

Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.

Open till 6:30pm weekdays

Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.

No minimum at the yard

A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.

Scrap metal recycling, Bayswater

Scrap metal recycling for the Bayswater business precinct.

Metal Plus buys scrap metal from the heavy vehicle builders, fabricators, engineering shops and manufacturers of the Bayswater business precinct, through Bayswater, Bayswater North, Kilsyth and Montrose, and from the trades and households around them. Aluminium and steel offcuts, scrap copper cable, worn-out plant and workshop clear-outs are the usual loads.

Our yard is in Braybrook, on the far side of Melbourne, and we will not pretend otherwise. For a factory that is our problem rather than yours: industrial sites here are collected from the same as anywhere, and a site that keeps producing metal can have a bin, swapped as it fills. From a house it is a drive to the yard, which takes any amount. Graded in front of you, paid on the spot.

Where the yard is

Across town, on the same terms.

Bayswater is on the other side of Melbourne from our yard in Braybrook. For a factory or an industrial site that changes nothing: the truck comes to you, and the weigh-in, the grades and the payment are the same as at our gate. For a household it is a long drive, so ring or send a photo first and we will tell you honestly whether the load is worth it.

What we see from here

Scrap metal we buy from Bayswater.

This is what turns up from Bayswater, and roughly who it comes from.

01

Heavy vehicle and trailer building

Aluminium tray, body and checker plate offcuts, extrusion and sheet, and the steel from chassis and trailer work. Aluminium is paid well above steel, so give it its own bin.

Aluminium recycling, by grade
02

Fabrication and engineering

Plate and section offcuts, drops, turnings and superseded tooling from the precinct’s fabrication and machining shops. Stainless and brass kept apart from mild steel are each paid at their own grade.

Steel recycling
03

Electrical and plant

Scrap copper cable, busbar, electric motors and machinery from refits and closures. Cable is graded by how much copper is in it, so keep heavy cable apart from the thin stuff.

How it works

Four steps, and you are paid before you leave.

  1. 01

Ring us or send a photo

Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.

  2. 02

    Bring it to the yard

Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.

  3. 03

    Weighed in front of you

Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.

  4. 04

    Paid on the spot

Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.

Weighing and payment

You watch the scales. That is the whole policy.

The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

  • Your load is weighed where you can see it. Nothing goes out the back and comes back with a number on it.
  • You get a docket with the weight on it. Written down, in your hand, before anything is settled.
  • Grades are shown to you, not just quoted. If your copper is two different grades we will separate it in front of you and explain why.
  • Payment is settled on the spot. Once the weight is agreed, that is it. No invoice, no waiting.

Dawood is one of the nicest lads you’ll meet. Clearly communicated on the phone and was a pleasure to deal with. Had to get rid of these wheels asap and he took care of me with a fair payment.

Would highly recommend his service, easy and straightforward.

I recently had an old accident-damaged car that I needed to get rid of while I was in Bendigo. After searching on Google, I found MetalPlus in Melbourne, and I’m really glad I chose them.

The whole process was smooth and hassle-free. They were professional, easy to deal with, and offered me a fair price for my car. When I dropped the car off, everything was handled quickly, and I received my payment without any issues.

I’m very happy with the service I received and would definitely recommend MetalPlus to anyone looking to sell a scrap or unwanted car. Great experience overall!

Where we go

Orchards first, then rubber, nylon and heavy vehicles.

Settlement here began in the 1860s, when the district was still part of Scoresby North, and by the early 1900s it was orchards and farms. The name comes from Bayswater House, the property of a bookmaker and publisher, James John Miller, who named it after his birthplace. The station opened in 1889 as Macauley and became Bayswater in 1894.

Factories came after the war. Dunlop Rubber opened a works in Bayswater North in 1952 to make aviation products, British Nylon Spinners built its factory in 1956, and large plants and smaller factories followed. Today the Bayswater business precinct spreads over Bayswater, Bayswater North, Kilsyth and Montrose and across three councils, Knox, Maroondah and the Yarra Ranges, with around 5,000 businesses and more than 30,000 jobs.

The precinct is known for heavy vehicles, fibreglass, metals, pharmaceuticals, medical technology, defence and construction, and nearly all of that produces metal on the side: truck body and trailer offcuts, machined aluminium, copper cable and plant at the end of its life. Around it, the houses of Bayswater, Boronia and Kilsyth produce the renovation copper and shed clear-outs of any established suburb.

Questions

Scrap metal questions from Bayswater.

The ones we get asked most from Bayswater. Anything else, ring and ask.

Call 0452 220 422
There are yards closer to Bayswater. Why use one in Braybrook?

For a factory, the distance is ours to cover, not yours: the truck comes to your site. What is worth comparing is the part you can see, which is the load weighed in front of you, the weights and grades shown to you, and payment on the spot.

Can a workshop in Bayswater North have a bin?

Yes, for a site producing over a tonne, and the bin is free on industrial and workshop sites. It stays on your site, fills at your pace and is swapped when you ring or on a schedule. Each swap comes with its own weights and grades.

Do you buy scrap copper from Bayswater?

Yes: copper pipe, busbar, cable and wire, from a factory refit or a house. Copper is worth enough per kilo that it is the one household load from the east that is nearly always worth the drive. Take off any steel fittings you can, because clean copper is graded higher.

What scrap copper is worth

I have a trailer of household scrap in Boronia or Kilsyth. Is it worth the trip?

It depends on what is in it. Copper, brass, cable and aluminium usually are; a trailer of steel and roofing iron often is not, from this far. Ring or send a photo first. If you do come, the yard is open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday, with no minimum.

Can I get cash for scrap metal in Bayswater?

You are paid on the spot the moment the weight is agreed, on a factory collection in Bayswater just as at our gate. That is what a search for cash for scrap is normally after. How a scrap metal dealer may pay in Victoria is fixed by state law for every yard, and our page on the law explains it.

What the law says

What are scrap metal prices like in Bayswater?

The price is set by the metal, its grade, how clean it is and the weight, not by the suburb, at the prices per kg we publish. For a business in the precinct, sorting is where the money is: aluminium offcuts, copper cable and stainless kept apart are each worth far more than the same metal mixed into the steel.

Got metal sitting there doing nothing?

Ring us and we will tell you what it is worth and whether it is worth bringing in. Takes two minutes and it costs you nothing to ask.
