Scrap metal recycling, Essendon
Metal Plus buys scrap metal from the renovators and trades of Essendon, Essendon North and Niddrie, and from the workshops, warehouses and freight businesses of the industrial estates at Airport West and Tullamarine. Copper pipe, cable and brass out of old houses, and offcuts, racking and worn plant out of the estates, are the regular loads.
Our yard at 159 Ashley St, Braybrook is over the Maribyrnong, and a boot or ute load is worth bringing in: no appointment and no minimum at the gate. Factories and industrial sites around the airports can have it collected, and a site that fills a bin can have one swapped. Graded in front of you, paid on the spot.
Where the yard is
The Maribyrnong ties these suburbs to the yard. Tullamarine runs down to the river, Braybrook sits on it further downstream, and Essendon and Airport West are on the far side. A boot of copper or brass is worth the run, and for the industrial estates by the airports, the truck comes to you. From a house, the yard takes any amount, Monday to Saturday.
What we see from here
This is what turns up from Essendon, and roughly who it comes from.
Copper pipe, old wiring and brass tapware out of the period and interwar houses in Essendon, Essendon North and Niddrie. Small loads, high value per kilo.
What scrap copper is worthDamaged racking, pallet cages, steel strapping and aluminium from the warehouses and freight businesses around the airports. Aluminium is graded apart from the steel, so keep it to one side.
Aluminium recyclingRadiators, batteries, alloy wheels and old parts from the mechanical workshops of Airport West and the motor trade around Essendon Fields. Each is graded separately.
Scrap radiators, by typeHow it works
Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.
Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.
Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.
Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.
Three ways to sell
Pull in, get weighed, get paid. No appointment and no minimum. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement.
For factories and industrial sites across Greater Melbourne. Tell us what the site produces and roughly how much, and we will bring the right truck.
Scrap bins dropped on site for jobs over a tonne. Factories, demolition, construction and site clearance. We swap them out as they fill.
Weighing and payment
The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

Where we go
Essendon was gazetted as a town in 1852, probably named after Essendon in Hertfordshire, and its football club was formed in 1873. In 1921 the Commonwealth bought land to the north for Melbourne’s aerodrome. In the late 1940s it was the busiest airport in Australia, and it became an international airport in 1950.
Then Melbourne Airport opened at Tullamarine in 1970, and Essendon turned mainly to freight and light aircraft. Tullamarine, thought to be named after Tullamareena, a Wurrundjeri boy, had been hay and grazing country; the freeway built to the new airport between 1967 and 1970 cut it in two, and west of the freeway grew a large industrial estate. Airport West, a triangle of houses and industry against the old airport’s western boundary, filled in from the mid-1950s.
Today the old airport land is Essendon Fields, with businesses, car showrooms and a shopping centre around a working airfield, and Essendon itself is mostly houses from the Victorian era to the postwar years, many of them being renovated. Between them, the area produces two kinds of scrap: copper, cable and brass out of the houses, and offcuts, racking and old plant out of the estates.

Questions
The ones we get asked most from Essendon. Anything else, ring and ask.
Call 0452 220 422Yes. A factory or industrial site there can have a load collected, and one producing over a tonne can have a bin, free on industrial and workshop sites, swapped as it fills. Ring with the metal, roughly how much, and where a truck can get to it.
The copper first: old pipe and cable. Then brass tapware and fittings, any lead flashing off the roof, the gutters and the roofing iron. All of it is worth more sold than skipped, and a ute load of copper and brass is well worth the run to the yard.
Yes. Damaged racking, pallet cages, steel shelving and strapping all go as steel. A warehouse clear-out is usually a collection, or a bin if the metal is going to keep coming.
No. Pickup is for factories and industrial sites, so from a house, bring it in: there is no minimum at the gate and no appointment, and we are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday.
You are paid on the spot as soon as the weight is agreed, whether you bring a load from Essendon to our gate or we collect from a site in Tullamarine. That is what most people searching for cash for scrap want to know. How a scrap metal dealer in Victoria may pay is set by state law, the same for every yard, and our page on the law explains it.
Every load is priced on the metal, its grade, how clean it is and the weight, at the prices per kg we publish, so a kilo from Essendon is worth the same as a kilo from anywhere else. What you control is the sorting: copper, brass and aluminium kept apart each go at their own grade. Ring or send a photo and we will tell you what to expect.
Ring us and we will tell you what it is worth and whether it is worth bringing in. Takes two minutes and it costs you nothing to ask.
