You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.
Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.
Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.
A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.
Scrap metal recycling, Northern suburbs
Metal Plus buys scrap metal from the fabrication shops, engineering works, food plants and transport depots of Melbourne’s north, and from the builders and households in the suburbs between them. A lot of it is production scrap: sheet and plate offcuts, turnings, superseded plant and damaged racking.
It comes to our yard at 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, round the Western Ring Road. For a shop putting out offcuts every week, a bin on site, swapped as it fills, is usually the easiest arrangement. One-off factory and depot loads are collected, and anything from a house can be dropped at the yard, with no minimum. Graded in front of you, paid on the spot.
Where the yard is
Braybrook sits at the western end of the Western Ring Road, which is the road most of these suburbs are on. It is a genuinely easy run, and the northern industrial estates are a regular stop rather than a special trip.
What we see from here
Different regions produce genuinely different loads. This is what turns up from the northern suburbs, and roughly who it comes from.
Offcut sheet, drops, bar ends, punchings and swarf from the fabrication shops through Campbellfield, Thomastown and Somerton. Steel, stainless and aluminium, usually already separated by the shop.
Scrap steel and site binsTurnings, borings, offcut bar and superseded tooling. Worth keeping separate from general steel, because it is not priced the same.
Damaged racking, pallet cages, strapping, tanks, old bodies and trailer components from the depots through Somerton, Epping and Tullamarine.
Machine tools, presses, compressors and line equipment coming out at end of life or on a refit. Electric motors are worth separating rather than sending as steel.
Machinery dismantlingStainless tanks, benching, conveyor and vessel work out of the processing plants the north is full of. Stainless grades vary a lot and we will show you what yours came out as.
The stainless grades we buyCopper, cable and roofing out of the residential band through Coburg, Preston and Reservoir.
How it works
Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.
Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.
Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.
Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.
Three ways to sell
Pull in, get weighed, get paid. No appointment and no minimum. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement.
For factories and industrial sites across Greater Melbourne. Tell us what the site produces and roughly how much, and we will bring the right truck.
Scrap bins dropped on site for jobs over a tonne. Factories, demolition, construction and site clearance. We swap them out as they fill.
Weighing and payment
The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

Where we go
The northern industrial belt through Campbellfield, Thomastown, Somerton and Broadmeadows is one of the densest concentrations of metal fabrication and engineering in Victoria. Sheet metal shops, structural fabricators, machining, powder coating, food processing plant and transport depots, most of them producing steel and aluminium scrap as a by-product of every working day.
Around Tullamarine the character changes to airport freight and logistics: warehousing, racking, air cargo handling and the maintenance operations that go with them. Heidelberg West and Preston carry an older light-industrial mix that still turns over a lot of machinery.
Closer in, Coburg, Brunswick East, Preston and Reservoir are largely residential and renovating hard, which produces the same copper and cable story as the inner suburbs but with somewhere to park. Further out, Greenvale, Mickleham and Kalkallo are new estates still going up, and Eltham, Diamond Creek and Hurstbridge are established bush suburbs on big blocks.

Questions
The ones we get asked most from this part of Melbourne.
Call 0452 220 422Yes, regularly. It is a straight run on the ring road from Braybrook and the northern estates are a normal part of the week rather than an exception we make.
No. Pickup is for factories and industrial sites, which is most of what we collect up here anyway. From a house in Coburg, Preston or Reservoir, bring it to the yard: it is round the ring road, and there is no minimum at the gate.
That is usually the right answer for a shop producing scrap every day. The bin sits there, fills at your pace, and we swap it. Ring us with the metal and the room you have got and we will tell you what fits.
No. Sorted is worth more per kilo because somebody has to do it either way, so if it is easy for you it is worth doing. If it is not, bring it mixed and we will sort and grade it here where you can watch.
You are paid on the spot when the weight is agreed, at the yard or on collection from a factory. That is what most people searching for cash for scrap are after. How a scrap metal dealer in Victoria may pay is set by law, the same for every yard, and our page on the law sets it out.
Set the same way as for anyone: by the metal, its grade, how clean it is and the weight, at the prices per kg we publish. Where a factory can move the number is sorting. Clean stainless kept apart from mild steel, and aluminium apart from both, each go at their own grade rather than being averaged down.
Ring us and we will tell you what it is worth and whether it is worth bringing in. Takes two minutes and it costs you nothing to ask.
