Grade Price per kg
Car, 4WD and deep cycle batteries Top rate Whole lead acid batteries, any brand. $0.50 to $0.90/kg

Forklift and traction batteries Steel-cased traction batteries. $0.40 to $0.80/kg
UPS, alarm and standby batteries Sealed lead acid batteries. $0.40 to $0.80/kg

Most of a lead acid battery’s weight is lead, which is why a flat one is worth money rather than something to pay somebody to take away. The size of the battery decides the rest. A truck or forklift battery holds far more lead than a car battery, and a small alarm battery far less, so they are sorted by type before anything is weighed. Steel-cased forklift batteries are graded on their own.

Not sure which grade yours is? Ring, or send a photo, and we will tell you what to expect before you load the trailer.

Why people use this yard

Weighed in front of you

You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.

Paid on the spot

Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.

Open till 6:30pm weekdays

Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.

No minimum at the yard

A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.

What we buy

Every kind of lead acid battery we buy.

A lead acid battery is mostly lead by weight, which is why it is worth money rather than something to pay somebody to take away. Car, 4WD, truck, forklift or backup, we buy them whole, as they are.

You do not need to know the grade: we grade it in front of you and show you what came out of the load.

  • Used car batteries packed together on the ground at the yard

Car, 4WD and deep cycle batteries

Starter batteries out of cars, utes, 4WDs and motorbikes, and lead acid deep cycle batteries from caravans, boats and golf carts. Flat or dead is fine.

  • Large used truck batteries with yellow terminal caps, stacked together

    Truck, bus and tractor batteries

Bigger and heavier than a car battery, with more lead in them. Fleet and farm loads welcome.

  • A used forklift battery on a pallet, rows of cells inside its steel case

    Forklift and traction batteries

Banks of cells in a steel case, from forklifts, pallet jacks and floor sweepers. Heavy, so ring first and we will work out how to get it here.

  • A large crate full of small used sealed batteries from UPS and alarm systems

    UPS, alarm and standby batteries

Small sealed lead acid batteries from backup power, alarm panels, gate motors and data rooms. Taken by the box.

Not on the list, or not sure what you have got?

These are the common ones, not every battery we take. We buy lead acid batteries; for any other kind, lithium included, ring before you bring it. Not sure what yours is? Send a photo of the label and we will tell you.

Dawood is one of the nicest lads you’ll meet. Clearly communicated on the phone and was a pleasure to deal with. Had to get rid of these wheels asap and he took care of me with a fair payment.

Would highly recommend his service, easy and straightforward.

I recently had an old accident-damaged car that I needed to get rid of while I was in Bendigo. After searching on Google, I found MetalPlus in Melbourne, and I’m really glad I chose them.

The whole process was smooth and hassle-free. They were professional, easy to deal with, and offered me a fair price for my car. When I dropped the car off, everything was handled quickly, and I received my payment without any issues.

I’m very happy with the service I received and would definitely recommend MetalPlus to anyone looking to sell a scrap or unwanted car. Great experience overall!

Send us a photo

What are your batteries worth? Send a photo.

A picture from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is and what to expect for it, before you load the trailer.

The quickest way for us to get back to you.

So we know where you are.

How would you like to do it?

We only collect from factories and industrial sites. From a house, bring it to the yard: any amount, no appointment.

Rough is fine. "About half a ute of copper pipe and some brass fittings" tells us plenty. If you know roughly how much there is, say so.

Up to four. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is worth, and it saves a trip if it turns out not to be.

In a hurry? Ring 0452 220 422. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday.

Where to sell it

Where to sell old car batteries in Melbourne.

Drop it off at our yard, 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, with any amount, from a single flat car battery to a ute load from a workshop, with no appointment and no minimum at the gate. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday, and outside those hours by arrangement.

Batteries pile up in the transport yards in Brooklyn and the trade estates out east, and we buy from both. From a factory or an industrial site, we collect, weighed on site and paid on collection. Ring and tell us how many and what kind.

Bring photo ID, which Victorian law requires for every scrap metal sale. Carry batteries upright with the caps on, in a tub or on a tray, never on their side.

How much is a scrap car battery worth?

We pay $0.40 to $0.90 per kg for scrap batteries at our Braybrook yard in Melbourne, depending on the grade. By grade, per kg: car batteries $0.50 to $0.90, truck batteries $0.50 to $0.90, forklift batteries $0.40 to $0.80 and UPS batteries $0.40 to $0.80. What your load comes to is confirmed on the scales in front of you, by grade and weight.

Do you pay for old car batteries, or charge to take them?

We pay for them. A dead lead acid battery is worth money as scrap, so there is no reason to pay anyone to dispose of it. Bring it to the yard in opening hours, with no appointment and no minimum.

Dropping off at the Braybrook yard

Where can I sell old car batteries in Melbourne?

At our yard, 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday. Bring photo ID and the batteries, upright with the caps on, and you are paid on the spot.

Can I get cash for scrap batteries?

You are paid on the spot, the moment the weight is agreed. That is usually what people searching for cash for batteries are after. How a scrap metal dealer in Victoria may pay is set by state law, the same for every yard, and our page on the law explains what it says.

What the law says

What batteries do you take?

Lead acid batteries of every size: car, 4WD, motorbike, truck, tractor, forklift, deep cycle, marine, and the small sealed batteries from UPS and alarm systems. For any other kind, lithium included, ring before you bring it.

Do I need to drain the acid first?

No, and please do not. Bring the battery whole, upright and with the caps on. Battery acid burns, it must never be tipped down a drain or onto the ground, and we buy the battery whole.

Can you collect batteries from a depot?

From a factory, a depot or another industrial site, yes. Ring and tell us how many, what kind and where, and for a regular supply we can set up a standing arrangement. From anywhere else, a few batteries are quicker dropped at the yard.

Pickup for factories and industrial sites

Do I need ID to sell a car battery?

Yes. Bring photo ID: we ask for it on every sale, from everyone, as Victorian law requires for scrap metal.

Worth knowing

How to get more for your scrap batteries.

Including the times when the honest answer is that it is not worth your trouble.

  1. 01

    Keep them whole and upright

Do not drain a battery or break it open to get at the lead. The acid burns, it must never go down a drain or onto the ground, and the battery is bought whole anyway.

  2. 02

    Carry them safely

Upright, with the caps on, in a plastic tub or on a tray so a crack cannot leak onto anything. If one is already cracked or leaking, ring before you bring it.

  3. 03

Do not pay anyone to take them

A dead lead acid battery is still worth money as scrap. If you are being charged to get rid of old batteries, bring them here instead and be paid for them. Loose scrap lead is bought too.

However you bring it, it is weighed in front of you.

You watch the load go on the scales, you read the figure yourself, and you get it on a docket before money is discussed.

How we weigh and pay

Recognise yours?

Where scrap batteries usually come from.

The jobs that most often produce scrap batteries. If yours is not here it does not mean we will not take it.

  • Mechanics and auto electricians
  • Truck, bus and fleet depots
  • Forklifts and warehouse equipment
  • Farms, tractors and machinery
  • UPS and backup power replacements
  • Caravans, boats and old off-grid setups

How it works

Four steps, and you are paid before you leave.

  1. 01

Ring us or send a photo

Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.

  2. 02

    Bring it to the yard

Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.

  3. 03

    Weighed in front of you

Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.

  4. 04

    Paid on the spot

Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.

Weighing and payment

You watch the scales. That is the whole policy.

The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

  • Your load is weighed where you can see it. Nothing goes out the back and comes back with a number on it.
  • You get a docket with the weight on it. Written down, in your hand, before anything is settled.
  • Grades are shown to you, not just quoted. If your copper is two different grades we will separate it in front of you and explain why.
  • Payment is settled on the spot. Once the weight is agreed, that is it. No invoice, no waiting.
