Scrap copper wire and cable · per kg

$1.50 to $21/kg

As at

Scrap copper wire and cable prices per kg in Melbourne, as at 29 October 2026
Grade Price per kg
Bare bright wire (stripped) Top rate Clean, bright, uncoated wire with every bit of insulation off. The top grade. $11.50 to $21/kg
Heavy insulated cable Thick-core power cable, where most of the weight is copper. $9 to $15/kg
House wire TPS and flat household cable, out of rewires and renovations. $5 to $10/kg
Armoured cable Cable with a steel armour layer, paid on the copper inside. $4 to $9/kg
Data, phone cable and extension leads Thin cores in a thick jacket, so less copper to the kilo. $1.50 to $5/kg

Cable is paid on the copper recovered from inside it, not on what it weighs on the scale, so the amount of copper against sheath is the whole story. Heavy single and multi-core cable is worth the most, house wire sits in the middle, and data and phone cable, mostly sheath, is worth the least. Stripped bare bright wire is not priced as cable at all: it is Millberry, the top copper grade.

Not sure which grade yours is? Ring, or send a photo, and we will tell you what to expect before you load the trailer.

Why people use this yard

Weighed in front of you

You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.

Paid on the spot

Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.

Open till 6:30pm weekdays

Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.

No minimum at the yard

A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.

What we buy

Every kind of scrap cable and wire we buy.

Cable is paid on the copper inside it, not on what it weighs on the scale. That one fact explains almost everything about what your cable is worth and whether stripping it is worth your time.

You do not need to know the grade: we grade it in front of you and show you what came out of the load.

  • Coils of orange, pink, blue and black insulated power cable

    Heavy insulated cable

Thick single or multi-core with a high proportion of copper to sheath. The best paying cable by a distance.

  • Old white household cable, tangled, with a few copper pipe offcuts

    House wire

Standard domestic twin and earth off a rewire. Middling copper content.

  • Scrap armoured power cable, a cut end showing the armour wires around the core

    Armoured cable

Steel wire armour over the cores. The armour is weight that is not copper, and it is graded accordingly.

  • A bin of grey data and control cable with a few coloured leads

    Data and communications cable

Cat5, Cat6, phone and coax. Very thin cores and a lot of sheath, so it is the lowest paying cable grade.

  • Long strands of bright bare copper wire

    Bare bright wire

Not cable at all once the insulation is off. It goes into the top copper grade.

    Bright bare copper

Not on the list, or not sure what you have got?

These are the common ones, not everything we take. Not sure what is inside it? Cut the end and look at the core: copper shows orange-pink. Send a photo of the cut end and we will tell you what to expect.

Dawood is one of the nicest lads you’ll meet. Clearly communicated on the phone and was a pleasure to deal with. Had to get rid of these wheels asap and he took care of me with a fair payment.

Would highly recommend his service, easy and straightforward.

I recently had an old accident-damaged car that I needed to get rid of while I was in Bendigo. After searching on Google, I found MetalPlus in Melbourne, and I’m really glad I chose them.

The whole process was smooth and hassle-free. They were professional, easy to deal with, and offered me a fair price for my car. When I dropped the car off, everything was handled quickly, and I received my payment without any issues.

I’m very happy with the service I received and would definitely recommend MetalPlus to anyone looking to sell a scrap or unwanted car. Great experience overall!

Where to sell it

Where to sell scrap copper wire in Melbourne.

Drop it off at our yard, 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, with any amount, from a coil of extension leads to a ute load off a rewire, with no appointment and no minimum at the gate. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday, and outside those hours by arrangement.

Rewires are where most cable comes from, in the old terraces of the inner suburbs and the cottages and weatherboards of Footscray, and a ute load off a rewire is an easy run to the yard. From a factory or an industrial site, we collect, weighed on site and paid on collection.

Bring photo ID, which Victorian law requires for every scrap metal sale. Bring it insulated, and in separate bundles if you can: heavy cable, house wire and data are three different rates.

Questions

Questions about scrap cable and wire.

If yours is not here, ring and ask. It costs nothing and it saves a trip.

Call 0452 220 422
Should I strip my cable before bringing it in?

Usually not. For house wire and data cable the time almost never pays. For heavy cable in volume it can, so ring first and we will tell you straight rather than have you waste a weekend.

Why is data cable worth so much less?

Because you are paid on the copper recovered, and Cat5 or phone cable is mostly sheath with very fine cores in it. The same weight of heavy cable holds several times the copper.

Do you take armoured cable?

Yes. The steel armour is weight that is not copper, so it is graded on that basis, but it is absolutely worth bringing in.

Can you collect cable from a site?

From a factory or an industrial site, yes, weighed on site and paid on collection. From anywhere else, bring it to the yard: there is no minimum at the gate.

How much is scrap copper wire worth per kg?

We pay $1.50 to $21 per kg for scrap copper wire and cable at our Braybrook yard in Melbourne, depending on the grade. By grade, per kg: bare bright wire $11.50 to $21, heavy cable $9 to $15, house wire $5 to $10, armoured cable $4 to $9 and data cable $1.50 to $5. What your load comes to is confirmed on the scales in front of you, by grade and weight.

Do you take extension leads and power leads?

Yes. They are bought as cable, on the copper inside them, like any other. Bundle them with the house wire rather than the heavy cable.

Worth knowing

How to get more for your scrap cable and wire.

Including the times when the honest answer is that it is not worth your trouble.

  1. 01

In most cases, do not strip it

Stripping cable by hand is slow, and for house wire and data cable the extra rarely covers the hours. Bring it insulated. We would rather tell you that than have you spend a weekend on it for very little.

  2. 02

    Heavy cable is the exception

Thick single core with a high copper to sheath ratio can be worth stripping if you have real volume and a stripper rather than a knife. Ring and describe it before you start, and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth doing.

  3. 03

Keep the grades in separate bundles

Heavy cable, house wire and data cable are three different rates. Bundled together they get graded down towards the thinnest thing in the pile, and data cable is the thinnest thing there is.

However you bring it, it is weighed in front of you.

You watch the load go on the scales, you read the figure yourself, and you get it on a docket before money is discussed.

How we weigh and pay

Recognise yours?

Where scrap cable and wire usually comes from.

The jobs that most often produce scrap cable and wire. If yours is not here it does not mean we will not take it.

  • Domestic and commercial rewires
  • Switchboard and substation work
  • Office and data centre strip-outs
  • Construction site offcuts and tails
  • Solar and battery installations
  • Machinery and plant removal

How it works

Four steps, and you are paid before you leave.

  1. 01

Ring us or send a photo

Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.

  2. 02

    Bring it to the yard

Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.

  3. 03

    Weighed in front of you

Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.

  4. 04

    Paid on the spot

Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.

Weighing and payment

You watch the scales. That is the whole policy.

The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

  • Your load is weighed where you can see it. Nothing goes out the back and comes back with a number on it.
  • You get a docket with the weight on it. Written down, in your hand, before anything is settled.
  • Grades are shown to you, not just quoted. If your copper is two different grades we will separate it in front of you and explain why.
  • Payment is settled on the spot. Once the weight is agreed, that is it. No invoice, no waiting.
