Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.

A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.
What we buy
A catalytic converter is worth what is inside it: a ceramic honeycomb coated with platinum, palladium and rhodium. How much of each it holds depends on the car it came off, which is why two converters that look the same can be worth very different amounts.
You do not need to know what yours is: we identify it in front of you and tell you what it is worth.
Factory-fitted converters off cars, utes, 4WDs and vans, loose or cut out of the exhaust. They carry the most precious metal, and they are what most people bring in.
Converters still bolted to a flange, a length of exhaust or the manifold. Bring them as they come off: there is no need to cut them free first.
If the car is scrap anyway, sell it whole. The converter counts towards what the car is worth, and a car is collected free from anywhere in Greater Melbourne.
Scrap car bodies, collectedNot on the list, or not sure what you have got?
These are the common ones. Not sure it is a converter? It sits in the exhaust between the engine and the muffler, usually a flat or round can with a heat shield, and looking through the inlet you can see a fine honeycomb. Truck and diesel converters vary a lot: ring and describe yours first.

Price
It depends on how much platinum, palladium and rhodium is inside, and that depends on the make, model and engine it came off. An original converter is worth far more than an aftermarket one, which carries much less precious metal, and a converter that has been cut open or emptied has lost the part that pays. That is why converters are priced one at a time, on the converter itself, not by the kilo.
The quickest way to a real number is a photo of the converter, including any numbers stamped or printed on the shell, with the make, model and year of the car it came off. Ring with that, or send it through the form, and we will tell you what to expect before you drive in.
Send us a photo
A picture from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is and what to expect for it, before you load the trailer.
We will come back to you on the number you gave us. If it is during opening hours it is usually pretty quick.
If you would rather not wait, ring 0452 220 422.
Where to sell it
Drop it off at our yard, 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, with any amount, from a single converter to a box from an exhaust shop, with no appointment and no minimum at the gate. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday, and outside those hours by arrangement.
Bring photo ID. Victorian law requires it for every scrap metal sale and requires us to record who sold it, and converters are the part most often stolen off cars. If you are a workshop, keep the converters in their own box rather than in the steel bin, with any numbers on the shells facing up.
A whole scrap car with its converter still fitted is collected free, anywhere in Greater Melbourne, and the converter counts towards what the car is worth. From a factory or an industrial site, we collect, weighed on site and paid on collection.
Questions
If yours is not here, ring and ask. It costs nothing and it saves a trip.
Call 0452 220 422It depends on the converter. An original one off a car is worth far more than an aftermarket replacement, and the precious metal inside varies with the make, model and engine, so each one is priced on its own. Ring with the make, model and year, or send a photo of the converter and any numbers on it, and we will tell you what to expect.
Yes. Victorian law requires photo ID for every scrap metal sale, and the seller has to be recorded. Converters are the part most often stolen off cars, so there are no exceptions.
At our yard, 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, with one converter or a box of them and no appointment. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday. Bring photo ID.
Yes, but much less than an original. A replacement converter carries far less precious metal than the factory one it replaced. We tell you which yours is when we look at it.
Then most of its value has gone with the core. Ring before you bring one in and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth the trip.
If the car is scrap anyway, sell it whole. The converter counts towards what the car is worth, the car is collected free, and you do not have to get under it with a saw.
Yes, one at a time or a box at once. Keep them out of the steel bin, in their own box, and send a photo of the lot before you bring them, so you know what to expect.
Ring and describe them first. They vary a great deal, and we would rather tell you on the phone than after you have driven in.
Worth knowing
Including the times when the honest answer is that it is not worth your trouble.
Everything a converter is worth is in the honeycomb inside. One that has been cut open, emptied or knocked about until the core rattles out is worth very little, so bring it with the shell intact.
Taking one off a car yourself? Cut through the exhaust pipe either side of the converter, never into its body. Pipe or a flange left on is fine; we grade what is there.
Most converters have numbers stamped or printed on the shell. A clear photo of them, with the make, model and year of the car, is what gets you an accurate figure on the phone. The other parts off the car, the battery and the alloy wheels, are worth bringing too.
However you bring it, it is weighed in front of you.
You watch the load go on the scales, you read the figure yourself, and you get it on a docket before money is discussed.
How we weigh and payRecognise yours?
The jobs that most often produce scrap catalytic converters. If yours is not here it does not mean we will not take it.
How it works
Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.
Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.
Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.
Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.
Weighing and payment
The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.
Also in the load?
Bringing more than one? Keep them in separate piles if you can. Mixed loads get graded towards the lowest metal in them, and that is the most common reason people are paid less than they expected.
Ring us and we will tell you what it is worth and whether it is worth bringing in. Takes two minutes and it costs you nothing to ask.
