You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.
Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.
Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.
A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.
Scrap metal recycling, Preston
Metal Plus buys scrap metal from the households and renovators of Preston and Reservoir, from the plumbers, electricians and builders working on their houses, from the workshops and trade businesses along Bell Street, and from the factories in the industrial streets of East Preston, out towards Darebin Creek. Copper pipe and cable, brass tapware, roofing iron, aluminium windows and production offcuts are the regular loads.
Our yard at 159 Ashley St, Braybrook is a drive across the north, and a boot or trailer of copper, brass, cable or aluminium is worth bringing in: no appointment and no minimum. Factories in East Preston and Reservoir can have a load collected, and a workshop that fills a bin can have one swapped as it fills. Graded in front of you, paid on the spot.
Where the yard is
The yard is in Braybrook, on the western side of Melbourne, so from Preston or Reservoir it is a proper drive rather than a quick run. It pays for copper, brass, cable and aluminium, which are worth enough per kilo to cover the trip; a trailer of steel is a closer call, so ring or send a photo first. For the factories of East Preston and Reservoir, the truck comes to you.
What we see from here
This is what turns up from Preston, and roughly who it comes from.
Copper pipe, old wiring, brass tapware and roofing iron out of the Housing Commission and postwar houses of Preston and Reservoir, as they are rewired, replumbed or knocked down for units.
What scrap copper is worthOffcuts and old stock from the trade suppliers and workshops along Bell Street: copper, brass, cable, radiators, batteries and alloy wheels. Each is graded on its own, so keep them out of the steel.
Scrap cable and wireProduction offcuts, racking and worn-out machinery from the factories between High Street and Darebin Creek. Old machines can be dismantled where they stand and taken away.
Machinery dismantlingHow it works
Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.
Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.
Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.
Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.
Three ways to sell
Pull in, get weighed, get paid. No appointment and no minimum. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement.
For factories and industrial sites across Greater Melbourne. Tell us what the site produces and roughly how much, and we will bring the right truck.
Scrap bins dropped on site for jobs over a tonne. Factories, demolition, construction and site clearance. We swap them out as they fill.
Weighing and payment
The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

Where we go
Robert Hoddle cut this country into farm allotments in 1837, and settlement grew along Plenty Road and High Street. The name is thought to come from Edward Wood, who opened a store at the corner of High and Wood Streets in 1850 and came from Sussex, where there is another Preston. Reservoir, to the north, is named after the reservoirs built there in 1864, 1909 and 1913 to hold Melbourne’s water from Yan Yean.
Industry followed the farms: basalt quarries and clay pits for bricks and pottery, a bacon curing works from 1862 and a tannery from 1865. In 1924 to 1926 the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board built its workshops in Preston, and from late 1926 until 1956 they turned out W-class trams, the last of them the W7s. The site was rebuilt as a tram depot in 2016.
After the war Preston grew fast. Its population rose 37 per cent between 1947 and 1954, and the Housing Commission built about 2,600 homes across East Preston and Reservoir by 1966, as Italian and Greek families made the area home. Those postwar houses are now being rewired, replumbed and replaced with units, and the factories of East Preston and the trades along Bell Street turn out metal every working day.

Questions
The ones we get asked most from Preston. Anything else, ring and ask.
Call 0452 220 422Copper, brass, cable and aluminium almost always are: they are worth enough per kilo that a boot load covers the drive. Steel and roofing iron are worth it in a decent trailer load. Not sure? Send a photo first. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday, with no minimum.
From factories and industrial sites, yes, including the industrial streets of East Preston and Reservoir. We do not collect from houses: from a home in Preston or Reservoir, bring it to the yard, where there is no minimum and no appointment.
Yes: copper pipe, cable, wire and busbar, from a renovation, a trade ute or a factory. Copper pays the most per kilo of anything we buy, so it is the load most worth the drive. Clean copper with the fittings and insulation off goes at a better grade, and we show you which grade yours came out as.
Yes, for a site producing over a tonne, and the bin is free on industrial and workshop sites. It sits on your site, fills at your pace and we swap it, with the weights and grades shown to you for every swap. Tell us the metal and where a bin could go.
You are paid on the spot as soon as the weight is agreed, at our gate in Braybrook or on collection from a factory in East Preston. That is what most people searching for cash for scrap want to know. How a scrap metal dealer in Victoria may pay is set by state law, the same for every yard, and our page on the law explains it.
The same as anywhere: the metal, its grade, how clean it is and the weight decide it, at the prices per kg we publish. Copper and brass pay the most, aluminium next and steel least. On renovation scrap, keeping the copper, brass and aluminium apart is the biggest difference you can make. Ring or send a photo for an idea before you load up.
Ring us and we will tell you what it is worth and whether it is worth bringing in. Takes two minutes and it costs you nothing to ask.
