A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.
Scrap metal recycling, St Albans
Metal Plus buys scrap metal from the households of St Albans, Kings Park, Kealba and Keilor Downs, from the builders knocking down its postwar houses for units, and from the trades who live and work around it. Copper pipe and old wiring, roofing iron, sheds and fencing, garage clear-outs, and the batteries, radiators and wheels off cars being worked on in the driveway are the regular loads.
Our yard at 159 Ashley St, Braybrook is a short run south, so the easy way is to drop it off: no appointment and no minimum at the gate. A builder filling a bin on a knock-down can have one swapped as it fills. Graded in front of you, paid on the spot, and if you are not sure what you have got, ring and ask.
Where the yard is
Braybrook is a few suburbs south of St Albans, so for most people here driving in is the easy option: load the boot or the trailer, come in, and be weighed and paid while you wait. There is no appointment and no minimum at the gate, and any question before you set off, ring and ask.
What we see from here
This is what turns up from St Albans, and roughly who it comes from.
Copper pipe, old wiring, roofing iron and gutters out of the postwar houses being replaced with units. Pull the copper and the cable before the excavator arrives.
What scrap copper is worthOld mowers, bikes, tools, shelving, fencing and shed panels from a clear-out. Aluminium and brass are worth picking out of the steel before you load up.
Scrap aluminium, by gradeBatteries, radiators, alloy wheels and catalytic converters off the cars being worked on in the driveways. Each is graded on its own, so keep them out of the steel.
Selling a catalytic converterHow it works
Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.
Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.
Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.
Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.
Three ways to sell
Pull in, get weighed, get paid. No appointment and no minimum. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement.
For factories and industrial sites across Greater Melbourne. Tell us what the site produces and roughly how much, and we will bring the right truck.
Scrap bins dropped on site for jobs over a tonne. Factories, demolition, construction and site clearance. We swap them out as they fill.
Weighing and payment
The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

Where we go
St Albans began in 1886, when the Cosmopolitan Land and Banking Company subdivided a farm either side of the railway between Sunshine and Sydenham. Its manager, Alfred Padley, named the station after his family’s connection to St Albans in England. For half a century it stayed small, about 700 people by 1940, many of them working in the factories down the line.
Then the 1950s brought the migrants. The population went from about 900 to 7,000 in that one decade: Yugoslav, Maltese and Italian families first, then Greek and Russian, and later Vietnamese. By 2001 more than 35,000 people lived in St Albans.
Most of their houses went up in the fifties and sixties, and a lot of them are now being renovated or knocked down for units. That is where the metal from here comes from: copper pipe and old wiring out of seventy-year-old houses, roofing and fencing off the blocks being cleared, and sheds full of things somebody always meant to deal with.

Questions
The ones we get asked most from St Albans. Anything else, ring and ask.
Call 0452 220 422Yes. It is a short run south, there is no minimum at the gate, and copper and brass are worth enough per kilo that a small load still pays. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday.
No. Pickup is for factories and industrial sites. From a house, the yard in Braybrook takes any amount, and from St Albans it is only a few suburbs away.
Yes, from the old house coming down and the new one going up. The knock-down gives copper pipe, cable and roofing; the build gives framing, conduit and cable offcuts. On a job that keeps producing metal, a bin on site, swapped as it fills, beats trailer runs, and on a trade site over a tonne the bin is free.
Yes. Keep them to one side rather than buried in the steel, because each is graded on its own. For the converter, bring photo ID: Victorian law requires it for every sale.
You are paid on the spot as soon as the weight is agreed, and from St Albans that usually means at our gate in Braybrook. That is what most people searching for cash for scrap want to know. How a scrap metal dealer in Victoria may pay is set by state law, the same at every yard, and our page on the law explains it.
It depends on what is in the load. Copper and brass pay the most, then aluminium, with steel at the other end, and clean, sorted metal is worth more than a mixed heap. Ring or send a photo and we will tell you what to expect before you load up.
Ring us and we will tell you what it is worth and whether it is worth bringing in. Takes two minutes and it costs you nothing to ask.
