We pay $0.80 to $2.50 per kg for scrap lead at our Braybrook yard in Melbourne, depending on the grade.

Scrap lead · per kg

$0.80 to $2.50/kg

As at

Scrap lead prices per kg in Melbourne, as at 29 October 2026
Grade Price per kg
Ingots, weights and sinkers Top rate Solid lead with nothing attached. $1.80 to $2.50/kg
Sheet and flashing Soft lead off roofs, with the nails and sealant off. $1.60 to $2.40/kg
Lead pipe Old soft lead pipe. $1.50 to $2.30/kg
Wheel weights Clip-on and stick-on weights, with the steel ones picked out. $0.80 to $1.50/kg

Because lead is so heavy, a small amount adds up. Clean sheet, flashing and pipe take the best lead rate. Lead with paint, tar, sealant or nails on it is graded below that, wheel weights are sorted and weighed on their own, and lead still bonded to plasterboard or timber is graded on what can be recovered.

Not sure which grade yours is? Ring, or send a photo, and we will tell you what to expect before you load the trailer.

Why people use this yard

Weighed in front of you

You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.

Paid on the spot

Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.

Open till 6:30pm weekdays

Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.

No minimum at the yard

A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.

What we buy

Every type of scrap lead we buy.

Lead is heavy for its size, which works in your favour when it is weighed: a bucket of flashing offcuts comes to more than it looks. Clean lead with nothing stuck to it is where the money is.

You do not need to know the grade: we grade it in front of you and show you what came out of the load.

  • Crumpled and rolled lengths of old lead roof flashing in a pile

    Sheet and flashing

Roof and window flashing, sheet offcuts, and lead stripped off x-ray shielding or lead-lined doors. Clean soft lead with nothing attached, and the best paying lead grade.

  • A box of old bent lead pipe with a crumpled sheet of lead flashing

    Lead pipe

Old lead water and waste pipe out of older houses and buildings. Take any brass or copper fittings off: they are worth more in their own pile.

  • A tray full of used clip-on wheel balance weights

    Wheel weights

Clip-on and stick-on balance weights from tyre shops. Sorted on site, because a lot of newer weights are zinc or steel rather than lead.

  • Cast lead ingots piled loosely on the floor of a shipping container

    Ingots, weights and sinkers

Dive weights, fishing sinkers, ingots, keel and ballast lead. Solid lead, weighed as it is.

  • Used car batteries packed together on the ground at the yard

    Lead acid batteries

Car, truck and forklift batteries are bought whole, never broken open, and they have a page of their own.

    Car battery recycling

Not on the list, or not sure what you have got?

These are the common ones, not everything we take. Not sure it is lead? It is very heavy for its size, dull grey, soft enough to mark with a key, and a magnet will not stick to it. Send a photo and we will tell you what to expect.

Dawood is one of the nicest lads you’ll meet. Clearly communicated on the phone and was a pleasure to deal with. Had to get rid of these wheels asap and he took care of me with a fair payment.

Would highly recommend his service, easy and straightforward.

I recently had an old accident-damaged car that I needed to get rid of while I was in Bendigo. After searching on Google, I found MetalPlus in Melbourne, and I’m really glad I chose them.

The whole process was smooth and hassle-free. They were professional, easy to deal with, and offered me a fair price for my car. When I dropped the car off, everything was handled quickly, and I received my payment without any issues.

I’m very happy with the service I received and would definitely recommend MetalPlus to anyone looking to sell a scrap or unwanted car. Great experience overall!

Send us a photo

What is your lead worth? Send a photo.

A picture from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is and what to expect for it, before you load the trailer.

The quickest way for us to get back to you.

So we know where you are.

How would you like to do it?

We only collect from factories and industrial sites. From a house, bring it to the yard: any amount, no appointment.

Rough is fine. "About half a ute of copper pipe and some brass fittings" tells us plenty. If you know roughly how much there is, say so.

Up to four. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is worth, and it saves a trip if it turns out not to be.

In a hurry? Ring 0452 220 422. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday.

Where to sell it

Where to sell scrap lead in Melbourne.

Drop it off at our yard, 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, with any amount, from a few wheel weights to a roll of old flashing, with no appointment and no minimum at the gate. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday, and outside those hours by arrangement.

Most scrap lead comes off old roofs and out of old plumbing, which is why renovations of period houses in Footscray and the terraces of the inner suburbs turn it up, and a bucket of it is an easy run to the yard. From a factory or an industrial site, we collect, weighed on site and paid on collection.

Bring photo ID, which Victorian law requires for every scrap metal sale. And keep it in its own bucket: lead is easy to lose in a mixed load, and it is worth more weighed on its own.

We pay $0.80 to $2.50 per kg for scrap lead at our Braybrook yard in Melbourne, depending on the grade. Do you buy lead wheel weights?

Yes. They are sorted on site, because many newer weights are zinc or steel rather than lead, and only the lead ones are paid as lead. Bring them in a bucket as they come off the wheels.

Do you take old lead flashing off a roof?

Yes, and it is the most common lead we see. Clean flashing is the top lead grade, so pull off any nails, screws and old sealant before you bring it if you can.

Do you take lead-lined doors and x-ray shielding?

Yes. Lead bonded to plasterboard or timber is graded on the lead that can be recovered, so it is worth more stripped off its backing. For a whole x-ray room refit, ring first and we will tell you what suits.

Do you buy car batteries for the lead?

Yes, but whole. Batteries are bought as batteries and never broken open, because the acid inside is dangerous. Bring them as they are, upright, with the caps on.

Car battery recycling

Is there a minimum for lead?

No minimum at the yard: a few wheel weights are weighed and paid the same way a roll of flashing is.

Is it safe to handle scrap lead?

Handled sensibly, yes. Wear gloves, do not eat or smoke while you are handling it, wash your hands afterwards, and never melt or burn it: lead fumes and dust are toxic.

Worth knowing

How to get more for your scrap lead.

Including the times when the honest answer is that it is not worth your trouble.

  1. 01

Get the nails, screws and sealant off

Flashing usually comes off a roof with nails, screws, mortar or silicone still on it. Anything that is not lead pulls it down from the clean grade, and most of it comes off with a scraper in a few minutes.

  2. 02

Pull the steel wheel weights out

Not every wheel weight is lead. Newer ones are often zinc or steel, and a magnet picks out the steel ones in seconds. We sort the rest on site either way, and anything off a scrap alloy wheel is worth keeping.

  3. 03

    Do not melt it down

There is nothing to gain by melting scrap lead into ingots before you sell it, and the fumes are toxic. Bring it as it is. Wear gloves when you handle it, and wash your hands afterwards.

However you bring it, it is weighed in front of you.

You watch the load go on the scales, you read the figure yourself, and you get it on a docket before money is discussed.

How we weigh and pay

Recognise yours?

Where scrap lead usually comes from.

The jobs that most often produce scrap lead. If yours is not here it does not mean we will not take it.

  • Roofing and re-roofing jobs
  • Old plumbing and water service replacements
  • Tyre shops and wheel balancing
  • Medical, dental and x-ray room refits
  • Boats, keels and ballast
  • Fishing and diving gear

How it works

Four steps, and you are paid before you leave.

  1. 01

Ring us or send a photo

Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.

  2. 02

    Bring it to the yard

Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.

  3. 03

    Weighed in front of you

Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.

  4. 04

    Paid on the spot

Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.

Weighing and payment

You watch the scales. That is the whole policy.

The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

  • Your load is weighed where you can see it. Nothing goes out the back and comes back with a number on it.
  • You get a docket with the weight on it. Written down, in your hand, before anything is settled.
  • Grades are shown to you, not just quoted. If your copper is two different grades we will separate it in front of you and explain why.
  • Payment is settled on the spot. Once the weight is agreed, that is it. No invoice, no waiting.
