A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.
Scrap metal recycling, Inner Melbourne
Metal Plus buys scrap metal from the builders, electricians, plumbers, shopfitters and building managers working inner Melbourne, and from anyone renovating a terrace or clearing a basement. Most of it is high-value: copper pipe and cable out of old houses, stainless from kitchen refits, brass tapware, and aluminium from commercial fit-outs.
Our yard is at 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, a straight run out from the city. A ute or boot load is quickest dropped off at the yard, where there is no minimum. A strip-out with more than a tonne of metal can have a bin on site, and the industrial sites still left in the inner suburbs can have it collected. It is graded in front of you and paid on the spot.
Where the yard is
Braybrook is a straight run out west, so a ute or a car boot of copper is a short trip, with no appointment and no minimum at the gate. For a bin on a strip-out, the question worth answering first is where it can sit and how the metal gets to it. Tell us that on the phone before anything is booked.
What we see from here
Different regions produce genuinely different loads. This is what turns up from inner Melbourne, and roughly who it comes from.
Copper pipe, cable and old wiring out of the terraces and workers cottages through Fitzroy, Collingwood, Richmond and Carlton. Usually the highest value per kilo of anything on this list.
Scrap copper wire and cableOffice and retail fit-outs coming back out: partition framing, ducting, cable tray, conduit and shopfitting aluminium.
Stainless benches, canopies, sinks, shelving and cool room panel from cafe and restaurant refits, which the inner north and South Yarra produce constantly.
Stainless steel recyclingStructural steel, roof sheeting, old plant and machinery from the warehouse-to-apartment work through Abbotsford, Cremorne and Brunswick.
Copper pipe, brass tapware and stainless sinks out of houses being brought up to date. Easy to get wrong on price if you sell them as mixed steel.
Scrap brass taps and fittingsBasement clear-outs, old bike racks, roller doors, balustrade and plant room replacements. Ring before a big one and we will tell you what suits.
How it works
Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.
Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.
Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.
Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.
Three ways to sell
Pull in, get weighed, get paid. No appointment and no minimum. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement.
For factories and industrial sites across Greater Melbourne. Tell us what the site produces and roughly how much, and we will bring the right truck.
Scrap bins dropped on site for jobs over a tonne. Factories, demolition, construction and site clearance. We swap them out as they fill.
Weighing and payment
The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

Where we go
Very little is manufactured in the inner suburbs any more, and almost all of the metal that comes out of them comes out of change: a terrace being rewired, a warehouse converted to apartments, a restaurant refitted, an office floor stripped and redone for the next tenant.
That produces excellent metal. A hundred-year-old house in Fitzroy or Richmond has copper pipe and cable through it that predates anybody thinking of it as valuable, and a commercial kitchen strip-out in South Yarra is stainless bench and canopy in quantity.
What it also produces is a parking problem, which is why most inner-city metal comes out to the yard rather than the other way round. Most of these streets were laid out before trucks, half of them are one-way and a lot of them are permit or clearway, but a ute or a car boot gets out to Braybrook easily, and someone will tell you where to pull up when you arrive.

Questions
The ones we get asked most from this part of Melbourne.
Call 0452 220 422From factories and industrial sites, yes, though there are not many left in the inner suburbs. We do not collect from houses, apartments or shops. A ute or boot load is a short run out to the yard, with no minimum at the gate, and a big strip-out can have a bin on site.
If it is going on the street rather than on your own property, usually yes, and that comes from your council rather than from us. On site, in a driveway or in a car park, normally not. Ring us and we will tell you which situation you are in before you start ringing the council.
It can work, but it needs planning rather than a truck turning up. Tell us the building, the lift booking and where a bin can sit at the loading dock, and we will work to it. Commercial strip-outs in towers are a normal job, they are just not a same-afternoon one.
Yes, and from the inner suburbs that is usually the easiest way. If you can get it in a ute or a car boot, Braybrook is a short run out and there is no minimum at the gate. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement, so you are not trying to fit it into your lunch break.
You are paid on the spot once the weight is agreed. That is normally what someone searching for cash for scrap wants to know. The way a Victorian scrap metal dealer may pay is fixed by state law for every yard, and we explain it on our page about the law.
Often, but because of what it is, not where it comes from. Old copper pipe and cable, brass tapware and stainless are among the best-paying metals there are, and inner-city renovation produces a lot of them. The rate depends on the metal, the grade, how clean it is and the weight, at the prices per kg we publish. Send a photo and we will tell you what to expect.
Ring us and we will tell you what it is worth and whether it is worth bringing in. Takes two minutes and it costs you nothing to ask.
