Scrap steel prices per tonne in Melbourne, as at 29 October 2026
Grade Price per tonne
Heavy melting steel Top rate Beams, plate, RHS and heavy offcuts. $280 to $400/t
Cast iron Engine blocks, machine bases, old pipe and grates. $250 to $380/t
Light gauge steel Sheet, roofing, shelving and pressings. $180 to $280/t
Mixed and incidental steel Mixed steel with some non-metal still on it. $150 to $260/t

Steel pays the least per kilo of anything we buy, which is why it is priced by the tonne. Heavy steel with real thickness to it does better than light gauge sheet and roofing, cast iron is graded on its own, and mixed site steel is graded on what is in it. Concrete, timber and dirt left on the load are weight we cannot use.

Tell us roughly how many tonnes you have and we will tell you whether it is a trailer, a pickup or a bin.

Why people use this yard

Weighed in front of you

You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.

Paid on the spot

Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.

Open till 6:30pm weekdays

Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.

No minimum at the yard

A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.

What we buy

Scrap steel and cast iron we buy.

Steel pays the least per kilo of anything we take, and it makes up for it on weight. A job that produces steel usually produces a lot of it, which is why most steel comes to us in a bin rather than a trailer.

You do not need to know the grade: we grade it in front of you and show you what came out of the load.

  • Heavy steel I-beams and channel with flaking paint and rust

    Heavy melting steel

Structural section, beams, plate, RHS and anything with real thickness to it.

  • Light gauge steel roofing sheet and flashing offcuts

    Light gauge steel

Sheet, roofing, studwork, ducting and thin section. Bulky for its weight.

  • Cast iron brake discs and drums piled for scrap

    Cast iron

Brake discs, engine blocks, machinery bases, old pipework, baths and fireplaces. Graded separately from steel.

  • Mixed scrap steel: galvanised tube, conduit and offcuts in a bin

    Mixed and incidental steel

General site steel with fixings and light contamination in it.

Not on the list, or not sure what you have got?

These are the common ones, not everything we take. Not sure what you have got? If a magnet sticks hard, it is steel or iron. Cast iron is heavy and snaps rather than bends, and it is graded on its own. Ring and describe it, or send a photo.

Dawood is one of the nicest lads you’ll meet. Clearly communicated on the phone and was a pleasure to deal with. Had to get rid of these wheels asap and he took care of me with a fair payment.

Would highly recommend his service, easy and straightforward.

I recently had an old accident-damaged car that I needed to get rid of while I was in Bendigo. After searching on Google, I found MetalPlus in Melbourne, and I’m really glad I chose them.

The whole process was smooth and hassle-free. They were professional, easy to deal with, and offered me a fair price for my car. When I dropped the car off, everything was handled quickly, and I received my payment without any issues.

I’m very happy with the service I received and would definitely recommend MetalPlus to anyone looking to sell a scrap or unwanted car. Great experience overall!

Where to sell it

Where to sell scrap steel in Melbourne.

Drop it off at our yard, 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, with any amount, from a trailer of offcuts to a truck of beams, with no appointment and no minimum at the gate. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday, and outside those hours by arrangement.

Over a tonne, a bin on site is usually the answer: free on industrial, mechanical and demolition sites, and swapped as it fills. A one-off load from a factory or an industrial site, we collect. Steel in quantity comes from places like the fabrication belt in the northern suburbs, Dandenong South and Brooklyn’s transport yards.

Bring photo ID, which Victorian law requires for every scrap metal sale. And pull the copper, brass, motors and cable out before the bin goes: in with the steel they are paid as steel.

Is scrap steel actually worth anything?

Per kilo, not much compared with copper or brass. By the tonne it adds up, and most steel jobs produce tonnes rather than kilos. It is also the metal most likely to be worth a bin rather than a trailer.

What is the price of scrap steel per tonne?

We pay $150 to $400 a tonne ($0.15 to $0.40 per kg) for scrap steel at our Braybrook yard in Melbourne, depending on the grade. By grade, a tonne: heavy steel $280 to $400, cast iron $250 to $380, light steel $180 to $280 and mixed steel $150 to $260. What your load comes to is confirmed on the scales in front of you, by grade and weight.

Do you take cast iron?

Yes. Engine blocks, machinery bases, old pipes, baths and fireplaces. It is graded separately from steel.

Can you put a bin on our site?

Yes, for jobs over a tonne. On industrial, mechanical and demolition sites the bin is free; for any other job, ring and we will tell you what suits it. We swap it out as it fills so the work does not stop.

Scrap metal bins for sites

Do you pick up scrap steel?

From factories and industrial sites, yes, anywhere in Greater Melbourne, weighed on site and paid on collection. We do not collect from houses: bring it to the yard instead, where there is no minimum at the gate.

Pickup for factories and industrial sites

Do you take reo and mesh?

Yes. Knock the concrete off first if you can: cleanly cut reo is worth more than reo with footings still attached.

Do you take old sheds and roofing iron?

Yes, once the shed is down: the frame, the sheeting and the roofing all go as steel. If you need it taken down as well, ring and ask before you book anything.

Do you take engine blocks and brake discs?

Yes. They are cast iron, which is graded on its own rather than as steel, so keep them in a separate pile.

Worth knowing

How to get more for your scrap steel.

Including the times when the honest answer is that it is not worth your trouble.

  1. 01

    Get the non-ferrous out first

This is the one that matters. Copper, brass, aluminium and stainless left in a heavy steel bin are paid as heavy steel, which is a small fraction of what they are worth. Pulling out the motors and the cable before the bin goes is usually the most profitable half hour on the job.

  2. 02

Concrete, timber and dirt come off the top

Steel with concrete still on it is weight we cannot use and it affects how the load is graded. Reo that has been cleanly cut is worth more than reo with footings attached.

  3. 03

Over a tonne, ask about a bin

Steel adds up faster than people expect. If the job is going to make more than a tonne, a bin on site beats repeat trips with a trailer, and on industrial, mechanical and demolition sites it costs nothing.

However you bring it, it is weighed in front of you.

You watch the load go on the scales, you read the figure yourself, and you get it on a docket before money is discussed.

How we weigh and pay

Recognise yours?

Where scrap steel usually comes from.

The jobs that most often produce scrap steel. If yours is not here it does not mean we will not take it.

  • Fabrication and engineering offcuts
  • Demolition and structural strip-outs
  • Construction site cut-offs and reo
  • Farm machinery and implements
  • Plant and machinery dismantling
  • Roofing, shedding and fencing

How it works

Four steps, and you are paid before you leave.

  1. 01

Ring us or send a photo

Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.

  2. 02

    Bring it to the yard

Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.

  3. 03

    Weighed in front of you

Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.

  4. 04

    Paid on the spot

Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.

Weighing and payment

You watch the scales. That is the whole policy.

The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

  • Your load is weighed where you can see it. Nothing goes out the back and comes back with a number on it.
  • You get a docket with the weight on it. Written down, in your hand, before anything is settled.
  • Grades are shown to you, not just quoted. If your copper is two different grades we will separate it in front of you and explain why.
  • Payment is settled on the spot. Once the weight is agreed, that is it. No invoice, no waiting.
