Scrap copper prices per kg in Melbourne, as at 29 October 2026
Grade Price per kg

Clean copper pipe / No.1 copper Pipe, tube and busbar with no paint, solder or fittings on it. $9 to $19/kg
Copper candy (clean) Clean, bright stripped wire, thinner than Millberry. $10 to $16/kg
Dirty copper / No.2 / domestic copper Copper with paint, solder, fittings or light corrosion, and thin mixed wire. $6.50 to $16/kg
Burnt / tinned copper Wire that has been burnt to get the insulation off, or has a tin coating. $8 to $14/kg
Copper tubing / radiators Copper tube and coils with fittings, and copper and brass radiators. $8 to $16/kg
Aircon coils (copper and aluminium) Copper tube in aluminium fins, out of aircon units and condensers. $3.50 to $7/kg
Insulated copper wire & cable Paid on the copper inside: the thicker the core, the better the rate. $1.50 to $15/kg

Grade decides most of what you are paid. Millberry, bright and shiny stripped wire, takes the top rate, then clean pipe and No.1 copper, then copper candy. Pipe with solder, paint or fittings on it is No.2, burnt and tinned wire is graded on its own, and insulated cable is paid on the copper inside it. Electric motors are graded on their own.

Not sure which grade yours is? Ring, or send a photo, and we will tell you what to expect before you load the trailer.

Why people use this yard

Weighed in front of you

You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.

Paid on the spot

Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.

Open till 6:30pm weekdays

Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.

No minimum at the yard

A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.

What we buy

Every type of scrap copper we buy.

Copper is the highest paying metal we take, and it is the one where grade matters most. The difference between the top grade and the bottom is not small, so it is worth knowing which you have got.

You do not need to know the grade: we grade it in front of you and show you what came out of the load.

  • A dense bundle of long strands of bright bare copper wire

    Bright bare copper

Clean, unalloyed wire, bright and uncoated, nothing thinner than a household cable core. The top grade and the one worth separating out.

  • Clean copper pipe and tube offcuts, number one scrap copper

    Number one copper

Clean tube, pipe and busbar. No paint, no solder, no fittings left attached.

  • Stripped thin copper wire in loose loops, number two scrap copper

    Number two copper

Copper with paint, solder, brazing or light corrosion on it, and stripped wire too thin for bright bare. Still copper, still worth good money, just not the top rate.

  • Tangled insulated household copper cable, white flat cable with red and blue wire

    Insulated cable and wire

Priced on the copper recovered from inside it, so the thicker the core relative to the sheath, the better it does.

    Scrap cable and wire
  • A tangle of soft copper tube bent into hooks and loops, tarnished brown and green

    Air conditioning pipe and coils

Pipe with the lagging pulled off is graded like any other copper pipe. Coils with aluminium fins are graded on their own rather than as clean copper.

  • A copper and brass heater core on a pile of scrap radiators

    Copper radiators and heat exchangers

Usually copper and brass together, which is why they are graded on their own rather than as clean copper.

    Scrap radiators
  • Scrap alternators, starter motors and compressors with copper windings

    Electric motors and transformers

Any size, from workshop tools up to industrial plant. Bring them whole: they are graded on their own rather than as clean copper.

Not on the list, or not sure what you have got?

These are the common ones, not everything we take. Not sure if it is copper or brass? Copper is pinker and softer, brass yellower and harder, though under tarnish they look alike. Send a photo and we will tell you what it is and what to expect for it.

Our guarantee

Bring us a written quote and we will beat it by 10c a kilo

Got a price from another Melbourne yard? Bring it in writing and we will better it by ten cents per kilogram. Not a vague promise to match, a set figure we put our name to.

Send us a photo

What is your copper worth? Send a photo.

A picture from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is and what to expect for it, before you load the trailer.

The quickest way for us to get back to you.

So we know where you are.

How would you like to do it?

We only collect from factories and industrial sites. From a house, bring it to the yard: any amount, no appointment.

Rough is fine. "About half a ute of copper pipe and some brass fittings" tells us plenty. If you know roughly how much there is, say so.

Up to four. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is worth, and it saves a trip if it turns out not to be.

In a hurry? Ring 0452 220 422. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday.

Where to sell it

Where to sell scrap copper in Melbourne.

At our yard, 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, in Melbourne’s west. Drive in with any amount, from a bag of offcuts to a trailer load, with no appointment and no minimum at the gate. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday, and outside those hours by arrangement.

From a factory or an industrial site, we collect, weighed on site and paid on collection.

Wherever you sell it, bring photo ID, which Victorian law requires for every scrap metal sale. And choose a yard that grades your copper where you can watch. Grade matters more for copper than for any other metal, so a load graded down out of your sight costs you more here than anywhere else.

How much is scrap copper worth per kg?

We pay $7 to $21 per kg for scrap copper at our Braybrook yard in Melbourne, depending on the grade. By grade, per kg: Millberry $11.50 to $21, clean pipe $9 to $19, copper candy $10 to $16, dirty copper $6.50 to $16, burnt copper $8 to $14, copper tubing $8 to $16, aircon coils $3.50 to $7 and insulated cable $1.50 to $15. What your load comes to is confirmed on the scales in front of you, by grade and weight.

What is Millberry copper?

Millberry is bright, shiny copper wire with every bit of insulation off and nothing on it: no tin, no paint, no burn marks. It is the top copper grade and takes the top rate. Wire that is clean but thinner is copper candy, a grade below.

What is copper candy?

Copper candy is clean, bright stripped copper wire that is thinner than Millberry. It is the next grade down and still one of the best paying things we buy. Keep it apart from insulated cable and from burnt or tinned wire, which are graded lower.

Do you pick up scrap copper?

From factories and industrial sites, yes, anywhere in Greater Melbourne, weighed on site and paid on collection. We do not collect from houses: bring it to the yard instead, where there is no minimum at the gate.

Pickup for factories and industrial sites

How do I know what grade my copper is?

You do not need to. Bring it in and we will grade it in front of you and show you what came out of the load. If you want to know before you come, send a photo through the quote form.

Do you buy scrap copper wire?

Yes, all of it: bare wire, household cable, extension leads and heavy power cable. Bright bare wire is the top grade we buy. Insulated wire is priced on the copper inside it, so keep thick cable apart from thin, and anything already stripped apart from both.

Scrap copper wire and cable

Is it worth stripping the insulation off cable?

Usually not. The labour rarely covers the difference for household quantities. For heavy cable in volume it can be, so ring and describe what you have got before you spend an afternoon on it.

Do you buy old copper pipe?

Yes, from a few offcuts to a whole house re-pipe. Clean pipe with no paint, solder or fittings is number one copper, one grade below bright bare wire. Pipe with solder, paint or fittings still on it is number two, and still worth good money. Pull off any foam lagging, and if the fittings come off easily, take them off too.

Is there a minimum for copper?

No minimum at all at the yard. A bag of offcuts is weighed and paid the same way a trailer load is.

Dropping off at the Braybrook yard

I am a plumber or electrician with copper every week. Can we set something up?

Yes, and regular trade work is a lot of what we do. For a steady supply we can set up a standing arrangement, and once it runs over a tonne, a bin on site that we swap as it fills is usually easier than trailer runs. Ring and tell us what comes out and how often.

Worth knowing

How to get more for your scrap copper.

Including the times when the honest answer is that it is not worth your trouble.

  1. 01

    Keep the grades apart

This is the one that actually pays. A bin with bright bare wire, painted pipe and insulated cable mixed together gets graded down towards the lowest thing in it. Three separate piles are worth noticeably more than one mixed one.

  2. 02

Take the fittings off if they come off easily

Brass fittings and steel brackets left on copper pipe pull it out of the clean grade. If they unscrew, take them off and put the brass in its own pile, because scrap brass is worth money in its own right.

  3. 03

Do not strip cable by hand

For anything but a short run of heavy cable it is not worth the hours. Bring it insulated. If you have got enough of it that stripping would pay, ring and ask first rather than assuming.

However you bring it, it is weighed in front of you.

You watch the load go on the scales, you read the figure yourself, and you get it on a docket before money is discussed.

How we weigh and pay

Recognise yours?

Where scrap copper usually comes from.

The jobs that most often produce scrap copper. If yours is not here it does not mean we will not take it.

  • Plumbing replacements and re-pipes
  • Electrical rewires and switchboard work
  • Air conditioning pipework and coils
  • Electric motor and transformer windings
  • Fabrication and roofing offcuts
  • Demolition and site strip-outs

How it works

Four steps, and you are paid before you leave.

  1. 01

Ring us or send a photo

Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.

  2. 02

    Bring it to the yard

Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.

  3. 03

    Weighed in front of you

Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.

  4. 04

    Paid on the spot

Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.

Weighing and payment

You watch the scales. That is the whole policy.

The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

  • Your load is weighed where you can see it. Nothing goes out the back and comes back with a number on it.
  • You get a docket with the weight on it. Written down, in your hand, before anything is settled.
  • Grades are shown to you, not just quoted. If your copper is two different grades we will separate it in front of you and explain why.
  • Payment is settled on the spot. Once the weight is agreed, that is it. No invoice, no waiting.
