Scrap brass prices per kg in Melbourne.

We pay $6 to $13 per kg for scrap brass at our Braybrook yard in Melbourne, depending on the grade.

Scrap brass · per kg

$6 to $13/kg

As at

Scrap brass prices per kg in Melbourne, as at 29 October 2026
Grade Price per kg
Red brass / gunmetal Top rate Valves, pump bodies and bushes. Higher copper, reddish under the tarnish. $9 to $13/kg
Yellow brass (clean) Taps, fittings and valves with no steel, plastic or rubber on them. $8 to $12/kg
Dirty / mixed brass Brass with steel, plastic or other metals still attached. $6 to $9/kg
Brass turnings and swarf Clean, dry machining turnings, kept apart from steel swarf. $6 to $9/kg

Grade decides what you are paid. Red brass, with more copper in it, is worth more than yellow. Clean fittings are worth more than dirty brass with steel threads or plastic handles still on, and turnings are weighed on their own. A mixed bucket that nobody sorts gets averaged down, which is why we sort it in front of you.

Not sure which grade yours is? Ring, or send a photo, and we will tell you what to expect before you load the trailer.

Why people use this yard

Weighed in front of you

You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.

Paid on the spot

Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.

Open till 6:30pm weekdays

Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.

No minimum at the yard

A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.

What we buy

Every type of scrap brass we buy.

Brass is one of the better paying metals and one of the most commonly undersold, because a mixed bucket of fittings gets averaged down unless somebody actually sorts it.

You do not need to know the grade: we grade it in front of you and show you what came out of the load.

  • A heap of yellow brass plumbing fittings, elbows and valves in a bin

    Yellow brass

The common one. Taps, fittings, valves, locks, keys, decorative hardware.

  • Old gunmetal and red brass valve bodies and meter parts, tarnished green

    Red brass

Higher copper content and worth more. Often older plumbing fittings and valve bodies.

  • A heap of yellow brass turnings and swarf from machining

    Brass turnings and swarf

From machining. Taken by weight, kept out of the solid grades.

  • A stack of old brass and copper radiator cores

    Brass radiators and heat exchangers

Brass with copper in them, graded on what is recovered rather than as clean brass.

    Scrap radiators
  • Mixed old brass taps, valves and fittings with steel and plated parts still on

    Dirty brass

Fittings with steel threads, plastic handles or chrome plating still attached. Still worth bringing, just graded separately.

Not on the list, or not sure what you have got?

These are the common ones, not everything we take. Not sure if it is brass or copper? Brass is yellower and harder, copper pinker and softer, but under tarnish they look alike. If you cannot tell, bring both and we will sort them in front of you.

Dawood is one of the nicest lads you’ll meet. Clearly communicated on the phone and was a pleasure to deal with. Had to get rid of these wheels asap and he took care of me with a fair payment.

Would highly recommend his service, easy and straightforward.

The whole process was smooth and hassle-free. They were professional, easy to deal with, and offered me a fair price for my car. When I dropped the car off, everything was handled quickly, and I received my payment without any issues.

Our guarantee

Bring us a written quote and we will beat it by 10c a kilo

Got a price from another Melbourne yard? Bring it in writing and we will better it by ten cents per kilogram. Not a vague promise to match, a set figure we put our name to.

Send us a photo

What is your brass worth? Send a photo.

A picture from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is and what to expect for it, before you load the trailer.

The quickest way for us to get back to you.

So we know where you are.

How would you like to do it?

We only collect from factories and industrial sites. From a house, bring it to the yard: any amount, no appointment.

Rough is fine. "About half a ute of copper pipe and some brass fittings" tells us plenty. If you know roughly how much there is, say so.

Up to four. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is worth, and it saves a trip if it turns out not to be.

In a hurry? Ring 0452 220 422. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday.

Where to sell it

Where to sell scrap brass in Melbourne.

Drop it off at our yard, 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, with any amount, from a handful of tap bodies to a bucket of fittings, with no appointment and no minimum at the gate. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday, and outside those hours by arrangement.

Renovations are where most brass turns up: bathroom and kitchen refits in the inner suburbs and period houses in Footscray both turn out taps, valves and old door hardware, and a bucket of it is an easy run to the yard. From a factory or an industrial site, we collect, weighed on site and paid on collection.

Bring photo ID, which Victorian law requires for every scrap metal sale. And choose a yard that sorts your brass where you can see it. A bucket of fittings sorted into red, yellow and dirty is worth more than the same bucket averaged as one.

Questions about scrap brass.

If yours is not here, ring and ask. It costs nothing and it saves a trip.

How do I tell brass from copper?

Brass is yellower and harder, copper is pinker and softer. If you are not sure, do not guess: bring it in and we will separate it in front of you.

The grades of scrap copper

Are chrome-plated taps still worth anything?

Yes. Under the plating they are brass and they are paid as brass, on the appropriate grade. There is no need to strip the chrome.

Do you take brass with plastic handles on?

Yes. It goes in the dirty brass grade rather than clean, so if the handles come off easily it is worth taking a minute over.

Is there a minimum for brass?

No minimum at the yard: a handful of tap bodies is weighed and paid the same way a bucket of fittings is.

Dropping off at the Braybrook yard

How much is scrap brass worth per kg?

We pay $6 to $13 per kg for scrap brass at our Braybrook yard in Melbourne, depending on the grade. By grade, per kg: red brass $9 to $13, yellow brass $8 to $12, dirty brass $6 to $9 and brass turnings $6 to $9. What your load comes to is confirmed on the scales in front of you, by grade and weight.

Do you take brass keys, locks and door hardware?

Yes. They are yellow brass, the common grade. Keep them apart from anything with steel in it, and if handles or screws come off easily, take them off.

Worth knowing

How to get more for your scrap brass.

Including the times when the honest answer is that it is not worth your trouble.

  1. 01

Separate anything with steel in it

A brass fitting with a steel thread or spring inside is not clean brass, and one of them in a bucket can pull the whole bucket down a grade. If you can see steel, put it in its own pile.

  2. 02

Chrome plating is fine, leave it

Plated taps are still brass underneath and we grade them accordingly. Do not waste an afternoon trying to get plating off.

  3. 03

Keep it out of the copper

Brass and copper look similar under a bit of tarnish and they are not worth the same. Mixed together, the lot gets graded as the lesser.

However you bring it, it is weighed in front of you.

You watch the load go on the scales, you read the figure yourself, and you get it on a docket before money is discussed.

How we weigh and pay

Recognise yours?

The jobs that most often produce scrap brass. If yours is not here it does not mean we will not take it.

  • Marine and irrigation fittings

How it works

Four steps, and you are paid before you leave.

  1. 01

Ring us or send a photo

Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.

  2. 02

    Bring it to the yard

Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.

  3. 03

    Weighed in front of you

Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.

  4. 04

    Paid on the spot

Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.

Weighing and payment

You watch the scales. That is the whole policy.

The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

  • Your load is weighed where you can see it. Nothing goes out the back and comes back with a number on it.
  • You get a docket with the weight on it. Written down, in your hand, before anything is settled.
  • Grades are shown to you, not just quoted. If your copper is two different grades we will separate it in front of you and explain why.
  • Payment is settled on the spot. Once the weight is agreed, that is it. No invoice, no waiting.
