Grade Price per kg

Industrial electric motors Large motors out of plant and machinery. $1 to $2/kg
Small electric motors Pumps, power tools, fans and compressors. $0.80 to $1.60/kg

An electric motor is paid on the copper recovered from its windings, so it is worth well above steel and well below clean copper. How much copper there is against steel decides the rest. Copper-wound motors are worth more than aluminium-wound ones, starter motors and alternators are graded on their own, and a motor with a heavy cast iron pump or gearbox still bolted to it is graded on everything that came in with it.

Not sure which grade yours is? Ring, or send a photo, and we will tell you what to expect before you load the trailer.

Why people use this yard

Weighed in front of you

You watch the load go on the scales and you see the reading yourself. Nothing gets weighed out the back.

Paid on the spot

Settled the moment the weight is agreed. No invoice to wait on and nobody to chase next week.

Open till 6:30pm weekdays

Two hours after most Melbourne yards shut, 5pm on Saturday, and after hours by arrangement if you ring ahead.

No minimum at the yard

A boot load is weighed the same way as a truck load. Factories and industrial sites, we collect.

What we buy

Every kind of scrap electric motor we buy.

An electric motor is paid on the copper inside it, and most of its weight is the steel around that copper. That is why motors are graded on their own: worth well above steel, well below clean copper.

You do not need to know the grade: we grade it in front of you and show you what came out of the load.

  • A heap of small scrap electric motors with their copper windings showing

    Small electric motors

From power tools, pumps, fans, gate and garage door openers and workshop machines. Bring them whole.

  • A heap of large blue and grey three-phase industrial motors in a scrap yard

    Industrial electric motors

Three-phase motors off plant, conveyors, air compressors and pump sets, any size. Copper-wound motors are worth more than aluminium-wound ones.

  • Scrap alternators and starter motors piled together at the yard

    Starter motors and alternators

Out of cars, trucks and machinery. Graded on their own rather than with general motors.

  • Stacks of scrap transformers and coils with copper windings

    Transformers

Copper or aluminium wound, from welders, power supplies and switchboards. Drain any oil first, and ring before you bring an oil-filled one.

Not on the list, or not sure what you have got?

These are the common ones, not everything we take. Not sure if a motor is copper or aluminium wound? Scratch a winding through the vent: copper is orange-pink underneath, aluminium silver. Or send a photo and we will tell you what to expect.

The whole process was smooth and hassle-free. They were professional, easy to deal with, and offered me a fair price for my car. When I dropped the car off, everything was handled quickly, and I received my payment without any issues.

Been in and had a good run? A review takes a minute and it genuinely helps. Leave one here, or just ring 0452 220 422.

Send us a photo

What are your motors worth? Send a photo.

A picture from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is and what to expect for it, before you load the trailer.

The quickest way for us to get back to you.

So we know where you are.

How would you like to do it?

We only collect from factories and industrial sites. From a house, bring it to the yard: any amount, no appointment.

Rough is fine. "About half a ute of copper pipe and some brass fittings" tells us plenty. If you know roughly how much there is, say so.

Up to four. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to tell you what it is worth, and it saves a trip if it turns out not to be.

In a hurry? Ring 0452 220 422. We are open until 6:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday.

Where to sell it

Where to sell scrap electric motors in Melbourne.

Drop it off at our yard, 159 Ashley St, Braybrook, with any amount, from a box of power tool motors to a trailer of pump sets, with no appointment and no minimum at the gate. We are open 7am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturday, and outside those hours by arrangement.

Motors come out of the plant and machinery of the northern industrial belt and the workshops and small manufacturers in Brooklyn. From a factory or an industrial site, we collect, weighed on site and paid on collection. For a plant clear-out, ring and tell us roughly how many motors and how big, and we will tell you whether a pickup or a bin suits the job.

Bring photo ID, which Victorian law requires for every scrap metal sale. And pull the motors out before the steel bin goes: in with the steel, they are paid as steel.

How much is a scrap electric motor worth?

We pay $0.80 to $2.20 per kg for scrap electric motors at our Braybrook yard in Melbourne, depending on the grade. By grade, per kg: starters and alternators $1.20 to $2.20, transformers $1 to $2.20, industrial motors $1 to $2 and small motors $0.80 to $1.60. What your load comes to is confirmed on the scales in front of you, by grade and weight.

Should I strip the copper out of my motors?

Usually not. For most motors the time it takes is worth more than the difference. For large motors in volume it can pay, so ring and describe what you have got before you spend a weekend on it.

The grades of scrap copper

Do you buy starter motors and alternators?

Yes. They are graded on their own rather than with general electric motors, so keep them in a separate box if you have a lot of them.

Do you take motors with the pump or gearbox still attached?

Yes. They are graded on everything that came in, so a motor with a heavy cast iron pump on it is worth less per kilo than the motor alone. If it unbolts easily, take it off. Either way, drain the oil first.

Are aluminium-wound motors worth less?

Yes. Aluminium windings are worth less than copper ones, so a copper-wound motor earns more for the same weight. We check them in front of you rather than guessing.

Do you take transformers?

Yes, copper and aluminium wound. Drain any oil first, and ring before you bring an oil-filled transformer so we can tell you how to handle it.

Can you collect motors from a factory?

Yes. Ring and tell us roughly how many motors and how big, and we will tell you whether a pickup or a bin suits. On a plant clear-out, the motors are worth separating from the steel before anything goes in a bin.

Pickup for factories and industrial sites

Is there a minimum for electric motors?

No minimum at the yard: a single motor is fine. A factory or an industrial site wanting a pickup can ring and tell us what it has.

Worth knowing

How to get more for your scrap electric motors.

Including the times when the honest answer is that it is not worth your trouble.

  1. 01

    Bring them whole

Breaking a motor down for its copper takes hours, and for most motors the extra does not cover the time. Bring them as they are. If you have a lot of big motors and think stripping might pay, ring and ask before you start.

  2. 02

    Drain the oil

Gearboxes, pump sets and some transformers hold oil. Drain it before you bring them: oil is weight that is not metal, and it makes a mess of everything else on the trailer.

  3. 03

    Take off the easy extras

Plastic fan shrouds, timber mounting boards and long steel base frames are not motor. If they unbolt easily, take them off. If not, bring it as it is and it will be graded on what came in. Loose copper wire goes in its own pile.

However you bring it, it is weighed in front of you.

You watch the load go on the scales, you read the figure yourself, and you get it on a docket before money is discussed.

How we weigh and pay

Recognise yours?

Where scrap electric motors usually come from.

The jobs that most often produce scrap electric motors. If yours is not here it does not mean we will not take it.

  • Plant and factory clear-outs
  • Pump and air compressor servicing
  • Auto electricians and mechanics
  • Electrical contractors and switchboard work
  • Power tools and workshop machines
  • Conveyor, gate and door motor replacements

How it works

Four steps, and you are paid before you leave.

  1. 01

Ring us or send a photo

Tell us roughly what you have got. A photo from your phone is usually enough for us to say whether it is worth bringing in and what to expect.

  2. 02

    Bring it to the yard

Drive it into the Braybrook yard Monday to Saturday, or at another time by arrangement. Any amount, and no appointment. Factories and industrial sites can book a pickup instead.

  3. 03

    Weighed in front of you

Your load goes on the scales while you watch. You see the reading and you get the docket. Nothing is weighed out the back where you cannot see it.

  4. 04

    Paid on the spot

Sorted the moment the weight is agreed. You are not waiting on an invoice and you are not chasing anybody next week.

Weighing and payment

You watch the scales. That is the whole policy.

The single most common worry people have about selling scrap is that the weight will not be right and there is no way to check. So we took the question off the table.

  • Your load is weighed where you can see it. Nothing goes out the back and comes back with a number on it.
  • You get a docket with the weight on it. Written down, in your hand, before anything is settled.
  • Grades are shown to you, not just quoted. If your copper is two different grades we will separate it in front of you and explain why.
  • Payment is settled on the spot. Once the weight is agreed, that is it. No invoice, no waiting.
